You get no argument from me. In fact the first time I saw images from this lens over at DP Review I wanted one.
Having also seen images from the Nikon AF-S 70-200 F2.8E FL and wanted it as well. Catching a sale I had to choose between the 70-200 F2.8E or Nikon 105 F1.4E (a Nikon price reduction ($1895) on the 70-200 F2.8E made it competitive to the 105 price), I chose the 70-200 F2.8E since it's a lens I'd use far more than a fixed focal length lens, especially at 105.
No regrets in that decision (the 70-200 F2.8E FL is also a remarkable lens) but will say if I had cash to spare, I'd also have the 105 1.4E.
Agree it's a great lens that produces Also love how it balances on a D850. I'm somewhat jealous

yes, same here. The 500PF thread is responsible that purchase.
KEH has a 105 listed at the moment for $1,575.86.. must.... resist... don't... push... the ... buy ... button.
The 58/1.4 and 105/1.4 are my two most revered Nikon "look" lenses.
I had a 28/1.4D and sold it -- and do not miss it particularly. I have considered a 35/1.4G or 28/1.4E as wide look options, but I don't see enough situations where I'd use, let alone miss either, so I hesitate. The 200/2 is stellar, but I have and am 100% satisfied with the Z 70-200/2.8 for that size and weight at lower cost, and frankly don't see enough extra juice at f2.0 to justify a dedicated 200/f2 lens for myself. I respect others opinions vary.
My only point here is IMHO the 58 and 105 1.4's are extremely special with few credible stand-in replacements. If you are a Nikon shooter, they are must-haves in my book.

I think you're being very reasonable. I have all four (28, 58, 105 and 200). The 58 is likely my favourite lens. The 105 for the price and size is tough to beat. I don't regret the 200mm at all as the images are incredible but it's huge and heavy. If I didn't get it for a very good used price, I would not own it. The 28 is a lens that I love but rarely use. I also bought this used for a great price so don't regret it, but I feel like it's a lens that I need to just go out with on its own to really put it to use.
