Yeah, I added a shot with the 105 at f/2
This was close, < 3ft. The CA bloom will most likely be less for more distant objects.
Looking at the shots, I forgot for a moment that the Zeiss is F2 max aperture (not taking anything away from that lens as it is utterly superb). I've been harassing the local dealer on FB since I woke up to see if I can go pick up my copy.
Man, who are you guys? Are you photographers? Sharpness, soft, sharpness, soft, blah blah...
Go out and SHOOT! I shoot myst of my clients photos at 1.4! Not one has complained yet!
Heck, I shoot with that "soft" 58G at 1.4 most of the time...
Some even say, "man, I love that soft look to your photos..."
Literally, clients who have no photography experience tell me this!

Chill out now! I'm just testing the lens, getting images per other forum members request. Don't worry, you'll be doing the same thing, you just will not post it.
As for clients, I don't have any right now. Care to get me some? Photography is not my full time occupation. I just got the lens today and I want to see what it can do. Keep your sarcasm to yourself please! Why do you have to complain? Just for that, I'm sorry to inform you, but your lens shipment has been delayed...
Come on Elijah, really? Just because the lens can be used at f/1.4 doesn't mean you have to shoot at f/1.4. F/1.4 is for low light and background separation but it's also the lenses worst aperture for image quality.
Yeah I'd like to get out and shoot. I'm about to go test the lens on the night sky using my AstroTrac star tracker to see how the stars look. But don't worry, you will not have to look at the images I post since it bothers you so much. Your not making good forum friends acting like that... Your early 105mm thread had turned into a discussion thread. I was hoping that you would like the samples. If you want better images of fashion and clientele, then we should start a thread specifically for that... Oh wait, there is one, it's the people photography forum.
You say, get out and shoot! Well what do you want me to shoot? What do you want to see? How can we photographers with this new 105 please you?

Very sharp to me.
I bought it, hoping to replace the heavy 200f2.
The compression is different from 200f2 but it's a nice shorter distance to work with
Balance better on a full size body.
Would love to see some comparisons if you get a chance. I realize the compression and length is different, but if you can fill the frame close to the same and compare, would be awesome.
I see both sides. This lens was not expected to by as sharp as the Zeiss, at least not for me. I just wanted to make sure it was sharp, not Zeiss sharp. I'm glad he did the comparison though. Much more interested to see a comparison in sharpness to the 200 F2 though. I would never own a MF lens, so I don't care how good and sharp the Zeiss looks.

I'm as calm as a clam
I'm actually a CNC machinist... Work 60+ hours every week. I don't do photography as a full time job lol
I'm just annoyed by some people who pixel peep everything...

I understand. Sounds like a cool job to have!!! I just want to be friends. I'm in the petroleum industry, I drive around and fix gas station equipment (gas pumps, cash registers, and the like). I wish I had more time for clients like a lot of you guys get. I work about 60 hrs a week also.

Here is a sharpness test: The ZF2 135mm Zeiss. The Zeiss is sharper wide open. Now I can test the 105mm at F/2 and compare if you want me to.
There is more out of focus blooming on the nikon vs the Zeiss.
Todd, Thanks very much for posting these. This was the one comparison I was hoping to see having owned the Zeiss. It would be very tough competition for any lens. The only lens I've used that might beat it is the Otus, and that's a close one. The Zeiss quality is impossible to beat.
I'll definitely wait to see more, and actual reviews on the Nikon because of the cost.
Yes, Zeiss is great in terms of detail, but the heavy usage of aspherical elements in the Otus (I own the 3 of them and used to own the 135mm until I sold it in favor of the Voigtlander 125mm f2.5 APO) also generate some unpleasant behaviors in OoF areas.
I believe that the 105mm f1.4 may be sticking a better balance overall. At least I'll have the chance to compare mine with the Otus 85mm f1.4 in the coming weeks.

noice.
A lot of times I wish I would drop all of this photo stuff and just own one camera and two lenses...
I have so much gear as a hobbyist, it's insane... But whatever, it's paid for by clients so I can't complain!
WANT TO SEE HOW THE OPTICS LOOK WIDE OPEN ON THE STARS THIS LENS IS SUPERB FOR REDERING STAR POINS AT F/1.4. THE COMA WILL GO AWAY BY F/2.8. THIS WILL BE ONE OF MY BEST GOTO ASTROPHOTO LENSES.

Whoa, now I'm impressed with your work, knowing that you're not a dedicated full-time photog. Your works are quite up there.
I, too, don't plan on doing photography for a living. But I dream of getting the D5s when it comes out, not really out of necessity, but just to admire the fine craftsmanship and an engineering marvel.
Also, I can't stand people all obsessed with sharpness these days. I'm perfectly happy shooting my 58 1.4G wide open for the rendering all day long. I'm into giving my digital photos a film look these days, I just love that film rendering.
Thanks for the additional samples Todd. I wonder if you could post any 1:1 pixels for landscape distances. I have one reserved for rental, and will do the same tests, but if you get a chance, I'd appreciate it!

At f/1.4 or f/5, f/8, etc? I may be able to do something tomorrow after work... I'm curious myself. I pretty much know what to expect. I usually shoot landscape images at f/4~f/8 depending on the subject. But I can get you some f/1.4 stuff!
Tood, whatever is convenient or easy for you. For my own tests (on an LR rental hopefully coming next week), I'll run an aperture series just to see what the limits of the lens is. Maybe one wide open, and another at f/5.6?
BTW how is the AF speed on AF-C? It looks like you're using a D810?
