Hey Elijah! I heard you went to the other side
So you replaced the awesome 28 1.4E, 58 1.4G, and 105 1.4E with some Canon glass? How sad!
I honestly thought you've gone to mirrorless by now, I'm shocked that I was wrong

Come back to the Nikon side and rebuild your kit already!

Yesh. I did. And loving it!

5DIV bodies are amazing and of course I wouldn’t switch if it wasn’t for the 35/85 combo.
Now that canon released a 35mm f/1.4L II and the 85mm f/1.4L IS, I have most of what I need.

I hate mirrorless with passion. I prefer the real view before capturing

I honestly don't think what system you use will affect your skill in capturing images! I have tried the 5DIV and it is a great camera

You Should’ve went with the 5dSR. However I don’t think any of the canon cameras have a flash sync above 250/sec. or no high speed sync, which is lame... I think the 5D SR only syncs up to 250/sec and with outdoor flash and wide aperture, neutral density filters have to be used. At one point I thought about switching to canon, only to have the 85mm f/1.2 and when Nikon was behind on their megapixel count... nothing above 12mp for quite a while. I now have the D850 (a second one is on order) and I just can’t go below 36mp. Too spoiled on 46!

That’s not true, and if it was I doubt Canon would be retaining many outdoor strobist photographers in their camp. In fact, Nikon bodies as well as any camera with a focal plane shutter maxes out around 1/200 or 1/250th. The HSS functionality is inherent to the strobe or flash being used.

Well I was watching a photo video of Joel Grimes taking an outdoor portrait using his Westcott beauty dish and he mentioned that his 5Dsr only synchronized with flash at a max speed of 1/200 and that he had to use neutral density filters to aid in exposure when using max aperture and off camera flash. That’s why I mentioned the sync issue. I looked it up on B&H in the specifications and it does say max 1/200 and does not mention high speed sync. Same with the 5D Mark IV, 1/200. So correct me if I am wrong, I would hope canon had this feature like Nikon does.

I think Joel still uses PCB Einsteins. I’ve never shot with them, but I’ve always understood them to be great in studio. Outdoors, not so much. No HSS, therefore Joel is achieving wide aperture outdoor portraits using flash by utilizing nd’s.

Thanks Charles! I guess I nailed it with 8 years of experience as a 27 yo. I am however enjoying the Canon rig.
Also, I must say this, I don't necessarily miss the 105 FOCAL LENGTH itself; I much much prefer the 85mm now!
The 35mm f/1.4 mark II and 85 1.4L IS is the best thing that ever happened to Canon wedding shooters in many many years.

No way. I don't need those megapixels and going from 1/200 to 1/250 makes no difference to me when it comes to sync speed.
I either ND my shots (overpowering the sun) or use HSS on my Profoto B1 or B2 (depending on the modifier.)

A shot below is an example of todays wedding ND'd with 5-stop and shot on B1 + 46" SoftLighter (new to me)

Apologies ahead of time for hijacking this thread...

PCB's are great in studio. Owned several units before. Definitely prefer Profoto for my wedding work now.

Ok so just tried out this lens on Sony a7 III and it works fine with the little focus box. The focus is slower than on my D750, but it's more accurate due to the on sensor phase detect...

I’m thinking about selling my 200mm and joining the 28/58/105 crew. I still have my 70-200 non-FL.

Still got this lens with the A7 III and Commlite pro. Facedetect worked ok for this session.

Rented this lens for a conference, and I was so impressed with it that I bought one. Incredible piece of glass - really nothing like it. Should be held in the same legendary status as the Zeiss 135 f1.8
