I think 14' wide will work, but you need to be centered in that space and not pushed to the corner on that right side. I assume that is a wall between the office and your shooting space. Can you do away w/ it (you could always use a curtain for seperation)? Reason being, you have 11' 6" to start; your backdrop will take up some space and you'd like to have 8' between your model and background at times.....that's not going to leave you much room to position your lights. This isn't to say that your space won't work as is, but merely observing some ways to get the most from it....Show more →
It's not a wall, it's like an arch, and I can't take it down.
The shot of the model is excellent BUT, some of you still place your model way too close to the background and then the background becomes very distracting. Move your model a few more feet forward.
Wanted to finally add since I have something to show. Now where near the level of most on here. Just got done playing with my new set-up (ST-E2, umbrellas and stands). I was able to get the ST-E2 to fire the 550EX in manual mode and the 420EX. I was also able to play with the ratios. ETTL is fun right now. As I learn more, I am sure I will be placing everything in manual (not the 420EX). I have soooo much to learn. I would like to replace or add another 550EX, but here is a sample. I could not get a good model but this one did not fuss.
Part of my ever changing studio. Setup for a set I have to take this weekend of another edgy model. Later in the set I will pull the chair out and sit a stool in the middle of the white muslin, which is a 36 feet long!
Behind the muslin. I've found that one AB800 blows out whites really really well. Also storage for all my other stuff. In the waste basket is a bunch of Valentines stuff and of course right by it is a bottle of Febreeze. Saved!
2 20x30 posters on my wall, earlier shots that I hang up for fun and interchange sometimes. These are from Snapfish, who seems to do quite an amazing job.
The master unit. I don't have too much cash to buy seperate radio slaves right now, so I'm working of optical flash. The 1600 has been an amazing work horse for me.
Notice the rubber duckies in the back from my last shoot The made it safe.
Also lint roller, and of course if you pay attention....Half a katana blade by the windows.
These are the must haves I have at my studio
Paper towels
Crates (for standing, siting, holding, and moving)
Lint Remover rolls
$1 clips from Home Depot
Random long straight rods
superstitious novely items ready to be props at anytime
a really ugly carpet that you do your best to hide.
JEEJ, I can finally post something in this topic because I just got my studiokit! (I'm as happy as a kid in Toys R us )
- I got two lights from the Bowens factory
- 1x 60x90cm softbox
- 1x white 82cm umbrella
- 1x silver 82cm umbrella
- 3x stand with 1x arm for my 5-in-1 reflectionpanel
- 1x radio-transmitter and receiver
- barndoors, gels and grid
- 1000x a big smile on my face
- and some other stuff
Forgot to take a picture of the setup, because I was having too much fun with my girlfriend. Shot about 100 shots and this is one of them :
Wow....I FINALLY made it all the way through this entire thread. It only took me about a day and a half (after reading a little, looking up products mentioned here, looking at peoples' websites). Needless to say, and as others mentioned here over the past year and a half, once I read this I feel I am hooked and will be giving some of my money to the studio lighting business.
As EVERYONE else has said, thanks for all of the patience, insight, knowledge, wisdom, and overall guidance that has been produced here. What a incredible wealth of information that I will continue to go back to time after time.
Great images Gerard and it surely looks like you're enjoying your new toys!!! I can't wait to order some lighting for myself (although it will only be 1 Alien Bee 800 and accesories for the time being).
I think Serge shows you don't need a "studio" to get great pictures. Some of the pictures in your own portfolio look like you've just pitched up in a shopping mall/cafe/company reception area, do you just walk up to them and ask if you can do a shoot there?
I also like the DIY gear, very effective, especially the IKEA green band
Wow William...where I work we have several of those (I work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin here in the State where I make various maps) and we call those "Plotzillas". I assume that you spend a great deal of money on all of the toner. Looks like its a great poster though.
As much of a PINTA as they are, there is nothing like having a wide format printer. There is always a customer who "needs" a poster or large portrait NOW!
I have the 42" HP5500PS and it does an incredible job, especially on canvas.
