Beautiful studio.

I think so, too; but it's not in the UK. That's Melanie's (unblinkable, here at FM) studio in Kinston, North Carolina.

A bump on the thread and an update of my studio. Kitchen and client area is now done.

I shot the photos as if you were walking into the studio and then back out.

Excellent! Didn't you post some shots when you first started working on the space? I'll have to go back and look. Anyway, great looking studio. Thanks for including the old photos.

Thanks guys. It's been a long road getting here. Hopefully the back rooms will be finished in a couple of weeks. You enter those through the french doors in the hallway. I'll post more when it's done.

Great place Brent, I always wanted to re-hab a Fire Station or a Church. Well done.
I knew a guy who redid a movie theater. It cost a fortune to level the floor!

Over the winter I moved from the basement in my house to the detached garage and did a pretty complete makeover of the building.
Here's the outside last December (2008) about the time the drywall was done.
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_745384.jpg

I started using it last summer to shoot seniors. One of my hobbies was working on cars, so it was a working garage with tools, oil stains, etc. This is a shot through the open garage door (the door still on the building in the above photo)
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_744488.jpg

Same view pretty much after I started moving back in. On the left you see the workbench (still there but now it's covered with a muslin). The pile of boxes in front of the workbench is the flooring for the sales room. This is presently the high key area - roll of seemless is used.
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_745385.jpg

Turn to your right and you get
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_745386.jpg
You can see the windows on the right that are in the front of the building. THe door leads to the sales room.

The shelving thing on the wheeled cart I found in the garage as shelves. Turns out it was acutally the original kitchen cabinets (there were 2 of them) turned backwards. I cleaned one up and hung it on the wall and it's now my cabinet for lenses, props, etc.

This is looking back at the garage door. I plan to replace the door later this year. Its being used now as my headshot area - i've got a number of fabric squares for BG, 2 kickers strip lights and a peters eyelighter. Works great.

http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_745383.jpg

Here is a fisheye view of the sales room. I still need to get something to hide the projector wires. I couldn't get the furniture I wanted to pre-wiring the room ended up a waste, and a new projector needed to be closer to the screen. Oh well, nothing like remodeling a no-yet finsihed space! (baseboard needs to go in, but I can't be sawing inside and making dust and the weather is still crappy wet around here - rain at somepoint for 12 of the last 14 days)
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_773177.jpg

The air conditioning got installed last wednesday so the heavy lifting is done. I've got baseboards and trim to do and some outside work to finish up. All told It's been about $10,000 worth of work mostly done by me but some was farmed out, plus another $4000 maybe in outfitting the place (furniture, computer, wheeled stands, shelving, etc).
It's been worth every penny so far - wedding bookings are up, averages are up, I'm selling larger prints and canvases (sold 1 16x20 in 3 years till I got this space - sold 5 this year).

I keep telling myself I'll do nicer pics than these - these are just quickie P&S pics for the most part, but that means cleaning up and organizing everything -ha, not my specialty!

I recently posted a short stop motion video to youtube that shows my studio in action.

intro-duck-tion provides a one-minute forty-eight second glimpse into my studio set-up and the creation of one of my most recent images. The stop-motion footage was shot entirely with still cameras and the music was made entirely by mouth.

I hope you enjoy it and it give you some insight about working in a very small space.
