I already posted my studio many moons ago and the only thing I added was Elinchrom lights and some more hot-pots for some music videos we have planned in the new year. One thing I neglected was the reception area. If you have clients and such visiting for the first time, I think a proper reception is a must to instill some sense of a business like attitude/image. Prior to all this I just had a table with some mugs and caps and clipboards and all that with our company logos on it. As we grew a bit and I had visiters of all sorts, I decided to spend a little money and make the reception look like a reception.

Now it looks presentable and it hardly cost anything. The iMac was 67 dollars and works and such but with five computers..... it is only for the girl to look at whenever I need someone at the desk. I also added a refurbished one-line phone that looks more than it is,

http://fortressoffreedom.com/Office87.jpg

Finally I bought a discontinued Lexmark fax/copier/scannner..... It is big and impressive and only used for fax.....

This was a quick pose for an announcement that happens tonight. It was not for you guys but for the music guys so please forgive. Most of my stuff is there except for the Nikon D70/SB800 that took the pic., and there is also an audio booth at the other end of this area that is pictured earlier. Lots of hot lights as we do video also. Question: How many of you are seen in business attire and do you think this is proper at anytime for a photographer when dealing with a client at the studio (events not included here.....). Or should it be camera vest, etc. to look that part.....

Hi, just thought I would get my first post out of the way.
Found this thread from a link searching for studio's, I'm only up to page 25 and I've already starting to throw things out of the garage and collecting hardware, looking forward to seeing the rest and hopefully showing the results at some stage. Thanks to all contributors.

Hi guys, I'm a bit new to photography having just bought a Digital Rebel last December, and this thread has just been another step into the world of photography for me. After discovering this thread over 2 months ago, I started looking into getting studio equipment as soon as possible. I managed to buy 3 Alien Bees 800s, and a bunch of equipment from amvona.com's Ebay site. I highly, highly recommend both, as I was able to get all of my equipment for much less that what I originally thought. IMO, the amovona stuff is of great quality, but to be honest, this noob doesnt have anything else to compare it to.

First, I can't say enough about this thread and how informative and inspiring it has been! Thanks to everyone.

Now, on to my shoot... I have a few friends who work for a local radio station. Every Christmas, they promote "Merry XXX-Mas", an amazingly popular stunt that drives loads of traffic to their website. Basically, everyone at the station takes pictures of themselves in some type of Christmas theme, while at the same time, just barely covering their "bits and pieces".

The pics are usually always done with P&S cameras, in someone's home, in front of the Christmas tree, etc. I've done some photography work for my friends over the past year, and I suggested letting me take their Merry XXX-mas pics this time as well. Something of much better quality that would beat everyone else's pics this year. What a better way to get started on studio photography?

Unfortunately, my setup shots are not as good as others here, mainly due to the fact that my widest lens is a 50/1.4 on a 1.6x crop Canon Digital Rebel (the exact equipment I used for this shoot) I simply did not have enough room to step back and get everything in the shot. I decided to invest in the lighting equipment, rather than a wide angle lens right now

One interesting note: I priced 1/4" plexi glass as JohnE and others suggested, but it was just out of my price range right now. I actually just went to Home Depot and bought 2 sheets that were about .090 of an inch thick. I forget how large they were off the top of my head, but they worked great! We didnt have any issued with the plexi bowing in at all, and we shot these on carpet. I did have to clone out the seam where the two sheets met though.

The final pics were touched up in photoshop, and might be a bit much for some tastes. I wanted to bring this up, because I have read some criticisms on heavily altered work. This was the look I was going for, especially in the second photograph which turned out just like I wanted it.

"Cocktail" Carly:

http://cameron.smugmug.com/photos/45935467-L.jpg

The only thing I really didnt like about this photo was that I should have cleaned the plexiglass, and I really couldnt think of a good way to get rid of the imperfections in Photoshop.

"Cuz" Jackie:

In the end, Randi didnt actually like the photo I chose for this promotion. She thought she looked like a corpse and went with this one I dont like instead

I had a great time shooting these, and I am extremely pleased with how they turned out! Please let me know what you think, as constructive crticism is very welcome. Thanks again for everyone who contributes to this thread. I look forward to everyone's future posts!

Spent about 5 hours last night just reading this topic alone and a wealth of information. Great photographs and setups everywhere and like all, I would also like to thank JohnE for sharing his knowledge with us. I have a few questions to ask.

I am an absolute no-brainer when it comes to studio setups, product photography and portraits. However, after seeing this thread alone, I would like to start off on a small scale. Living in India (especially the part where I am), we do not have the luxury of buying stuff like the AB400 and not many people at the store who could help me out on the right kind of equipment.

Could you tell me as to what would be the minimum equipment (very tight budget for a beginner) I would require to setup a basic studio in a room of 11'x17' (10' high) or a slightly larger 17' x 22' (10' high room)? What kind of lighting should be used? I am thinking of headshots/portraits and some product photography (t-shirts and other apparel).

Thanks, JohnE again for such encouragement. I cannot remember everyone here, but I thank all here for getting me interested in this new world for me.

Shoot in October with an alternative model and between outfits the MUA stepped in for a few quick headshots for her portfolio, it worked great as lighting tests as well. So here is Kira, the Make up Artist...

And the Behind the Scenes...
http://hot-rock.com/oOo/1/kira-bts01.jpg

Setup was 2 Lights, and 2 slaves. Main light with med softbox to the right, fill via shoot through umbrella and plenty of bounce in the room. Hairlight was 20ws slave into Gold and Silver Umbrellas. And the BG light was a 40ws slave with a red and blue gels onto a charcoal canvas backdrop.

Very nice work Jason.

I hope the readers notice the way you've used cutters and such to control your lighting... both directly controlling the spread from the hairlight as well as controlling/cutting down of the bounced light using the two black side panels. Good technique.

eeana:
Yeah, the small slave strobe was directly behind her about 2-3ft(butt height?) off the ground shooting upwards about 60deg or so. It was very close to the background, maybe less than 1ft. The gel is a plastic gel cap made for the slave, it just clicks over the diffuser, very handy.

Amazing thread! Can't get enough of it
I have seen a number of images here where photographers used plexiglass on top of the backdrop on the floor. Can someone share their experience:
- how thick the glass should be
- which one works the best - white or clear. Or they used to produce different effeccts?
- is there any use for black plexiglass?
- I use 10 feet wide backdrop. What size of the glass do I need?

Thanks in advance.

I have been reading through this thread and am loving all these ideas. My problem is LIMITED space (and that my subjects are 4 yr old twin girls). So any recommendations on backdrops and lighting that can easily be put up and then taken down quickly - and stored so that my girls do not mess it up and so my husband does not throw a fit? He said we do not have the room for me to have a studio, so I need ideas that will be able to work well and then be able to be stored.

I only need a simple set up - maybe 2 solid backdrops, a stand and some basic lighting. Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you so much.

Jodi
