p.49 #2 · Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Here's a little contribution from me. I don't own my own studio space, so I'm often setting up makeshift studios or working out of rental spaces. This was an inexpensive rental space here in NYC that I was using for some testing.

Two setup shots first:

Setup was more or less the same for all of these: beauty dish overhead for key, either with or without a grid. Medium softbox for a hairlight. Background lit either by two small umbrellas or a single light with 30-degree grid and gels. Some shots used a reflector as well.

Some samples from the setup (be kind - these really aren't retouched or cleaned up at all):

I've been trying to get some ideas on setting up a small studio, but a lot of the (highly complimented) images in the first pages are no longer showing up...is there anyplace where ithis thread is archived in full?
Thanks!

The thread is still very much alive, but the images are probably links from other locations which the provider may have moved.

I'm pretty new and still trying to figure out lighting techniques. Let say I'm able to put up my basic set up. Fill light, back and accent and all the necessary lighting for portait.

Do I still use a flash on top of my camera?

Generally no. Studio lights are entirely separate and in place of the camera mounted flash.

@Shatterkiss: Your photographs are amazing. I just finished setting up my studio last night. I have so much to learn about lighting. A frustrating and fun experience all at once.

Thanks Rachel! This thread and forum is really a great resource for getting feedback and pointers on studio setups and work. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your posts in here!

This is a great thread but it would be nice if all the linked images still worked. I know that's a tough one for as old as the thread is but it would still be nice. The information here is fantastic, thanks to all who have posted.

Jon.

I do have a copy of this entire thread complete with all images. I have yet to figure out how to get it into a form that is viewable in a single document however.

If I can ever figure it out, I will consider posting that here.

And it's 440,002 views now and counting.

Not big enough, but it works I guess...
from the seamless to the back wall (entire length) is about 21' I usually have to be at the end wall to get a full body shot with a 50mm lens on my 20d. Width of that room is like 12'.

Thanks John and Arka - means a lot coming from two guys whose lighting and work I constantly admire!

TJ - I've got this thread dumping to PDF right now. There's a fair chance of it crashing my browser, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey Guys. As of Shatterkiss' post at 8/20/05 at 12:45PM I have archived this entire thread into a PDF and put it up for download both here and here

It is 346 pages long, and about 20MB so it'll take a bit. Any pictures viewable at that time are in the PDF intact. If anyone wants to mirror it on another place feel free.

I'm still uploading the files at this point, so they should be ready to download after 1PM EDT 8/21/05.

Fixed a typo in the first link. PM me if they're not working.

Finally remembered at the end of my shot to take a picture of my 'studio'.

Hand held 0.5s exposure here, didn't have portable flash and had turned the lights off so a little blury. opened up my lens as wide as I could in an effort to get everything but took two shots.

and

That's three lights, main on the left firing through an umbrella, right bouncing through another one for fill, and I was experimenting with a hair light using a 10 degree honeycomb in the third. I think I missed every shot with the hair light though or it was too dark. My subjects (aka, my two kids) weren't very still for me but at 2 and 3 I can't expect much.

My favorites out of 132 shots. Boy I like digital.

So this is not a copy of the thread with the missing images then? If TJ could provide his copy with "all" the images in a PDF that would be great, maybe you can help him get his copy converted? I'll gladly host it on 2 separate servers as well for anyone with the complete version.

Jason
