I'm about to redo the floor of my future studio. I can do it in any color. I am thinking about just a polished gray concrete but I can also do it in white or black. I am thinking that white could be great for when doing high key stuff - I would not have to use plexi or the seamless but think that an all white floor might make one feel like they were walking around in heaven. Black might feel too heavy so I am leaning towards the natural gray of the concrete. I was also toying with the thought of the white on the shooting side of the floor and then having it naturally feather into the natural gray toward the dressing area [strange I know but just brainstormin' now].
Any thoughts or suggestions or are there any rules/guidelines for flooring colors?
Entire space is almost a perfect rectangle but it gets smaller toward the proposed dressing area. shooting area is about 26.5 x 34. The door area then narrows it down to aboout 21 and it continues down in a narrower rectangle so the other side abutting it is about 21 x 22?.
Taken yesterday (Saturday). No major post processing done (yet). I still need to do some work to tone down some blown areas, but in general I'm happy. Last image needs some sharpening.
I've only just finished my studio. Still got a lot to do, mainly background support system and backdrops but it is almost there. I'm mainly going to be concentrating on portrait and product photography. Studio pictures below.
Tall ceilings ? Yes, they are 12 foot high. I thought this was great, right up to the point where I started decorating and then that wasn't so much fun.
Two other people have already said I could do transplants in there. I kind of agree it is a little "cold" at the moment. Once all the background system is in and some soft furnishings (small sofa by the door etc.) it should be a little less clinical. I hope.
banterer, it depends if you plan to use your floor as a backdrop or not. I haven't had the option of that, so in my mind the only thing I worry about is reflections off something like a white wall. But I could also see cases I might want a reflection. So all in all I don't think it matters at all. Gray sounds nice.
So yeh, my 2 cents doesn't count for much on this topic. Oh, I was at Borders looking at some Photography magazines and they had something recent on the top 10 photo studios in and around New York I think. All of them where white (but not glossy white).
There is a magazine called 'Picture', this month's cover features a photofrom the Pirnelli (sp?) calendar and it has a section (or article) about top studios in it. Amazing high level studios!
OK, I am a bit confused. I have NO lighting right now, but I would like to set something up for family portraits. Is there a recommended starter set or list of equipment you guys would recommend? I read someone saying not to mix strobes with constant lighting? If so, which do you recommend?
Thanks for all the help. I am new here and it is refreshing to find a forum where everyone is generally willing to help each other out! Kudos.
Can I just go with the "Beginner Bee" set-up and get good lighting for family portraits? Anything else you recommend? Maybe a reflector? As you can see, I am totally new to the whole lighting thing.
