I have the original GR and loved it, but the lens got stuck and warranty was no longer valid. Since I generally prefer 40-50mm I never bought a new one. Hadn't looked in this thread for years, so the GRIIIx had completely passed under my radar. To get such an urge to buy new gear is very rare for me, but now I can't wait to get one (but it'll probably have to wait a few weeks)!
If I really like it I may get a GRIII later to go with it. Should be a perfect kit for long hikes and traveling. I have the old wide angle converter and assume it fits the GRIII too?

Totally agree! But the excellent, yet expensive WA adapter on the GR 2 doesn't fit the GR3...

Oh no, that's disappointing. I could try and have my old GR fixed after all, but I rarely need wider than 28mm. Also, I guess the batteries too are of a new type, so I'd always have to bring two chargers and two types of batteries, which isn't practical.
It's probably best to start with the GR IIIx, use it for a while and then decide.

The good news is that the GR 3 and 3x have a USB 3 socket, will charge in-camera and thus no urgent need for an external charger.
