p.2 #1 · Pink Happens

Excellent image as usual - I like the colors and composition. I might be tempted to brighten the sky just a tad so as to seem a bit closer to what my eyes would see, but then again I am an old film guy like juststeve and appreciate the art of pushing images.

I like the text with the photo. If one does not want to read it then they do not have to do so. Adds more interest in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing.

I personally enjoy stories of adventure, or little tidbits on how the light developed and changed, just as long as they're not overly embellished with "look what I endured to get this!" vibes. That does not seem to be the case here, though. Mark goes on amazing adventures that I'm sure many of us are jealous of, and captures some pretty jaw-dropping sunrises and sunsets with stunning color. In fact to be quite honest, I bet this is is much more similar than us "old farts" might think the scene could have looked like if captured on Velvia 50... For example many of Ben Horne's 8x10 images are incredibly vibrant, simply because he waited days (years even) for the perfect light and conditions.

I'm definitely enjoying this image, Mark. I think I may have seen it before on Facebook, or a similar one. I remember because the clouds look like a long exposure, but somehow it's not. I've seen similar sunsets myself though so I know it can be real, when the clouds are just the right type and at just the right elevation at just the right time. And that's the kind of event that draws us on such adventures. :-)

Beautiful image Mark. I always enjoy your backstory because unlike some you keep it pretty real and I love reading about how the image came about as I sit in my cubical at work managing projects and other technical stuff. If I just wanted to view the image I would go to 500px or Flickr and view that way. Also enjoyed RyDy's work for years too.

Hmmm - I've seen some pretty intense evening skies this past year that would have to be dialed back on saturation for anyone to believe its natural. So I have to wonder what this would have looked if it were shot with Velvia? Anyway nice pic and I always enjoy extra info relevant to the photo or location.

Great image Mark. Looks otherworldly. The colors look believable to me, maybe slightly oversaturated in the ground and rocks but within the realm of possibility.

I don't mind the extra verbiage, especially when it's not just cut-and-pasted from somewhere else. Those who care only about the image or don't want to be influenced by the stories can simply skip ahead.

Nice shot Mark! I like it, although it does seem a little noisy in the foreground, so that distracts me a little. Perhaps just a tad bit on the shadow/black ?

In any event, could you care to share a little more information on your camping spot in the gorge? I Promise, won't tell everyone!

And i don't see the big deal with the little side note blurb. Obviously feels connected to the board, and wants to share his experience with us, so why not?

I love the image. Obviously, I can tell it's processed heavily. To me, I don't care. I know this isn't how it looked in person. But to me, that doesn't matter. You may be trying to accomplish a particular mood or theme. I don't care whether you did zero processing, just a little, a crapload, or you drank dyes and laxative and then farted them onto your image; all I care about is if it's pleasing to me as an end product. This one certainly does.

To some of the people whining like spoiled children, like Chez, about the long story, I have a solution. When you see a big paragraph, skip it. I hope you were sitting for that shocking idea. How did it not occur to you in your brain that you aren't required to read all the text. It's like dude, you *saw* it was a lengthy paragraph. Yet you continued to read. Either way, it just takes literally half a second to scroll down and view the image. Dear lord, the things people complain about.

Anyway, to finish on a positive note, great shot and colors!

Thank you everyone very much for the constructive feedback. Also the compliments and such. I really appreciate it and I take it all into very careful consideration.

I just got behind my main web computer, my calibrated 27 inch Mac Thunderbolt (Using the Skyper 4 Elite calibrated to - 2.2 gamma, 6500k white point, 130 Brightness - and viewed on Chrome) and strangely, it looks pretty tame to me and I feel like it might need a slight levels bump in the whites. On my iPhone, on the other hand, it looks a bit saturated still. I know a lot can play into this like file browsers, what monitor we use, whether our monitor is color corrected (calibrated accurately) how bright the room is we are viewing an image in, and how bright we calibrate our monitors too... But honestly on my system, which may very well be, and I am sure is, different than a lot of others here... it looks pretty close to how it looked to me when it happened and so I am pretty happy with it. If one does click on the image to force a black background, it will certainly be too bright and a little too punchy/saturated (it was edited on an 82/82/82 grey background - like here on FM).

I know many of us have wished for a long time now that there was a way to standardize how we all see things with our varying equipment...

So having said that, I don't doubt it looks different to different people, not even taking into very important consideration people's personal preferences...

Hi Devon. Thank you.

Sure, don't tell anyone but I often stay in the Eagle Creek Campground (last I read, the 1st campground in the US). But the other day that was not open yet. On highway 26 heading toward The Dalles about 10 miles away or so, there is a little pull out that is really hard to see. But one can drive up into the forest a bit there and camp for free. I have about 3-4 of such spots for both the Oregon and Washington side. The only thing you might have to worry about is the occasional meth head roaming around coming from Portland. Sad to say, they come to steal from cars parked in the Gorge. It seems to be getting worse every year.

Sorry for any confusion on my part, I was just kidding. It really looks to me like someone is up there. But this is a weird angle on Ship Rock and it is massive up there. I think like 1500 feet up or something. I don't think a person could even be seen if they really could stand up there...

Simply stunning image on my calibrated NEC MultiSync LCD 2690WUXi.

Thank you very much. Just a side question, what specs do you calibrate to?

And, for web, do you target near 130 for CD or "brightness"?

For web (not print) I target 2.2Gamma, 6500k White Point, and 130CD - brightness. I believe the 130 to be pretty much industry standard these days.

I do know that when I do this for both my wide gamut and my narrow gamut monitors, there still is a very slight warmer/cooler difference. Robert Park (Print guru) of Nevada Art Printers (Lumachrome Paper) has convinced me to take a step up and use the X-Rite system, which I should be doing before too long. He says it is more accurate.

Thank you. Although the mideast trip will be more centered around ancient history/archaeology and my own personal/emotional/spiritual retreat... How can I not photograph... ? I hope to have an amazing trip, learn a ton, get some images, share them and maybe take just a few people in 2017, but not for commercial purposes.

Thanks bro. That could very well be true. Just curious, what CD (Brightness) are you calibrated to? Sometimes when the monitors are brighter than 130 CD they get more saturated looking... I sharpened this on a pathetic rez Macbook Pro (you can not judge real/careful sharpness on). So my guess is that I may have hit it too hard with sharpening. I'll do a critical look on it when I get back to base for a few days... 5K

No idea Mark I just unpacked the IMac and plugged it in.

They come out of the box too bright as they are usually calibrated to be crazy bright for places like Best Buy. Calibrating to 130 CD (or brightness) will likely change the presentation significantly. Generally when these things come down in brightness via Spyder or X-Rite... calibration they usually get much more tame. FM member and print GURU (of Gurus IMO) Robert Park (Nevada Art Printing - Lumachrome HD) has been piping in on one of my facebook posts about calibration and the New Macs. It is very interesting, if you want to read there. There is massive issue with the new monitors. Including sharpening issues.

Like always, your shots are moody, dramatic and have a storytelling feel to them.
Great shapes and color (if not a tad saturated for my taste, but I love seeing what others do differently than me. That's how I grow).
I love the stories, and sometimes I do skip them and just look at the images; it's easy.

I just switched (from Spyder Elite) to X-Rite i1 Display and calibrated my Mac 27 inch Thunderbolt today (in a diffused lighted room, to 2.2 gamma, 6500 White Point and 130Dc (Brightness) and viewing via Chrome and looks as intended (very close to what we saw). It does not look nuclear, as it might for some who don't calibrate (and who knows what Internet Explorer will look like...).

I could see the foreground being a little darker as suggested above.

Thanks all for the feedback!

Terrific shot. Love the composition and the "feel" of the scene. For me, I would have altered the colors a little, not too much. Specifically, I would have either a) reduced the pink in the sky a little or b) added a little magenta to the foreground. To me, this would balance the sky versus the foreground a little better. But hey, I wasn't there, that is just my subjective thought from looking at the image on my MacBook... I may be way off.
