Don't dislike but am mystified by the f/5.6 decision given those ugly backgrounds?
How about because many people are so happy with the foreground subject that they don't give a damn what the background looks like? Those are good shots, and believe it or not, some people actually like to see detail in the background as well, instead of some unnatural bokeh. Not everyone is bokeh brain-washed.
True that. One of the docs we work with wants everything in focus. There is no such thing as any kind of acceptable bokeh to him. The only camera he has or shoots with is his i-phone.

Yeah, and certain people should shoot with a 400 f2.8 to get better background bokeh than they do with their 500 f4's.
I had to send in my lens. I wasn’t able to stop down my aperture past 230mm without an “Err” message after every shot. Wide open it performed flawlessly. I’m really hoping Nikon fixes this issue.
Didn't know where else to ask this question
Do the D500 raw files work with the stand alone version of Lightroom
which is 6.14 or do you need the subscription version of Lightroom
I get mixed answers when I Google it
I think you need to update to the raw engine to the latest, which is 10.1. I have the 6.14 version too but I use Capture One instead. My 6.14 Lightroom, after the updates, can read the D500 nef files.
