After a late lunch (and a couple of margaritas) in Haleiwa, I proceeded to photograph surfers near Pipeline on the northshore. I purposely arrived late in the day to see how the Nikon D500 and 200-500mm lens perform in less than ideal lighting. At this time of the year the sun sets behind the surfers. Conditions were OK, not great so the surf images are nothing special. However ...

Absolutely fantastic.

The AF truly is amazing...I took a couple thousand motocross images this weekend, no matter what frame rate you're shooting at it's just keeper after keeper.

I will have to check it out. I did a fine tune on the lens. Maybe it is still off.

Here is one that is not sharpened just converted from Raw to JPG in Photoshop. What do you all think?

That one looks good to me. I am not sure about the other's, just that they looked front focused.

Excellent feedback and some wonderful images shared thus far. I hope to have a D500 in hand before the month is over, I sold my D7200 and currently shooting with the D750, man do I miss the reach from 1.5x for my bird photography. I actually got to squeeze off a few clicks with one yesterday, love the soft shutter, and the feel of the camera.

I am going to be using mine with the 200-500 f/5.6 with teleconverters, any of you tried that combo as yet with a 1.4 or 1.7x would love to hear about af speed as well as IQ.

Happy shooting guys, have fun, enjoying your results.

This dog loves to run and makes a great target for AF training.
Th D500 nailed him right up to min distance on the Sig Sport

Pretty much convinced this Canon user to grab the D500. I have been waiting to see just this spread of subjects as I do a lot of birding and surfing. High ISO looks excellent considering it's a crop sensor, AF looks like it's excellent and the sensor has excellent DR. I have no problem using two systems as I also use Olympus with my Canon gear at the moment. I don't really want to get the 7D2 given the newest Canon sensors have improved a lot and I suspect we won't see 7D3 for at least 12-18 months.

Need to decide what lens to combine with the camera though. Torn between 200-500 or Sigma 150-600C. I have the Sigma in Canon mount and it has performed admirably with my 1DX, even wide open @600mm IQ is good. I'll assume the 200-500 will have the edge in AF speed but the latest firmware update on the Sigma yields very nice AF speed. Build quality is similar I suspect.

Also what general purpose lens in the 16-50 range would you recommend.

Awesome photos everyone, very jealous of some of the wildlife shots and awesome surf photos.

Big fan of the Sig sport - bought a new refurb on the sig outlet site for less than the 200-500mm.
Other upside is the doc and the option to change the mount if you must.

Down side might be weight but I hand hold it alot with out issue.

The new 16-80/2.8-4.0E VR is the one I'm thinking of. Expensive, but probably the best you can get at the moment.
You can get it as a "kit-lens" together with the D500 (saves a few bucks ).

You can always let sigma convert your 150-600S to a Nikon mount.

If you don't need the extra 100mm the Nikon 200-500 is probably the best choice. If really needed you can use the 1.4x TC on the Nikon and get acceptable results.

Hello everyone. Been a few years since posting here. I pre-ordered the D500 early April from Amazon and had it in my hands the Tuesday after launch. Here's a few random images from the first week. Battery and SnapBridge issues aside, big thumbs up on the D500!

every time i look at this camera i just end up stalled on lens selection, especially since i shoot 50mm. really tempted to rent one of these and see how it does with the 35f1.4?

Thanks

I have the 35mm ART - but have not tried it on the D500.
I expect to stick to the D810 on the short end.

i'm all AFC 99% of the time (and for these would have chosen 3D rather than group (i seem to have best luck with catching the eyes of my fast moving son). can't see why would you choose AFS??
