p.1 #1 · Sunset light at Mono Lake

This image was taken during my recent trip to Mono Lake, CA.

I took two images, one at f/8 for the tufas and mountains in the background and another at f/14 for the lake and foreground rocks. Basically I needed more DOF and smoothness for the water. These two images were later combined in post in a very simple process. (The exif will show f/8 only though)

There is something special about the lighting on the location and that makes come back very often. This was my 4th visit there.

Very relaxing and soothing image, Fred. I, too, have been there often and usually do not get good conditions.

Hey Fred,

This is very cool. Love the clouds, and the water looks cool too.

Mono Lake is a fun place to go. Besides the great light that is usually there, it's a location that really is constantly changing. The foreground areas seem to constantly look different. Hopefully the water level has risen in it with all of our rain this year. It's been getting dreadfully low and the water had pulled away from the closest tufas and limiting in mind some of the great compositions we have gotten used to over the years there.

Thanks Jeffrey. It was indeed a relaxing afternoon. It was completely overcast the entire day up to the point of this picture. I was not expecting to get any light or colors but luckly it happened at the right time.

This is my second time traveling there for spring break with the the kids. They go skiing and I escape during the good hour to take some pictures.
I remember visiting one other time in September and the waters were very calm with great reflections. I will try to schedule a trip during fall this year and take advantage of the Tioga pass to visit Yosemite as well. Do you know when Tioga pass usually closes?

Fred
I like this shot brings back memories.

Back when I joined this community you had shots of this area and I always wanted to go there and did in 2008, never captured it this good but none the less this makes me want to go back.
Thanks
Lynn

Thanks Lynn,
It makes me very happy to know one of my pictures motivated you to visit Mono Lake. I really like this location and don't get tired of shooting there. The first time was there I was shooting with a Canon D30. It was Canon's first digital SLR with a whopping 3MP sensor!
Take care,
Fred

Very peaceful image of the Mono Lake you captured. I love the color rendition.
I am also very fond of the Mono Lake and this very location as well. Thanks for sharing, Fred.

Yes, I will probably head-out mid-september. Can't wait for the fall colors this year.

Thanks Kee. I had some friends not shooting that afternoon because it was too cloudy. To my surprise, some light passed through right after sunset for a few minutes coloring the skies. There was another photographer there and we looked at each other with a smile on our faces.

Thanks. Usually I enhance the tones/colors in post but for this image, I set WB in-camera to "daylight" and kept everything pretty much as it was captured.

Perfect. I had this page bookmarked but forgot out it.
I will keep checking this page starting in September. Can't wait for Fall.

As said above the light is perfect and I like the depth you created with the clouds. You have also a beautifully composed foreground. It seems really a beautiful location.

As you are aware, fall picture taking can be frustrating with smoke from wildfires...in our area C.Oregon, spring is also iffy with prescribed buns.
