p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Techart AF adapter for M (and other) lenses for A7-II and A7R-II

Just arrived, works exceedingly well; not super speedy, but much faster than I can manually focus. Plus, with manual focus always available, it's quite simple for subjects near the camera to manually focus until the subject is reasonably sharp and then AF to finish the job. I've set up back button focus on my A7-II.

Also allows much closer focus...this 1951 Summarit 50/2 normally has a 3.5 foot close focus point; with the Techart, it can focus as close as 1.5 feet.

Tried it with a Contax/Yashica-to-M adapter as well, the heaviest C/Y lens I have is the 35-70. Weighs 567g with the C/Y-to-M adapter, but the Techart motor has no problems moving this much mass.

C/Y 50/1.7 = 275g, 35/2.8 = 318g, 28/2.8 = 356g (including the C/Y to M adapter.) All these are reasonably quick.

Summarit = 223g, 40/2 Summicron = 127g.

Adapter itself weighs 139g.

P̶r̶o̶b̶a̶b̶l̶y̶ certainly will drain the battery faster.

1 foot close focus with the 40mm f/2 Summicron-C (normal close focus is 2.3 feet.)

Glad to see you got your adapter.

If you don't mind my asking, what was your order number?
Mine is #735, allegedly to be shipped "late April", can hardly stand the wait.

Hope you post more pics taken with this adapter.

My order is 803. Definitely want to try this. Reducing minimal focusing distance will be great. One reason I really like Voiglander adapter for m mount, wonder if Techart can reduce minimal focusing distance more than Voigtlander or not?

They seem to have shipped until order number of about 600.
Mine is just a tad higher, in the 620s.
Still waiting but should be shipping soon.
Knock on wood!

Apparently the latest adapters seem to ship with Firmware version 2.

Many thanks d-intrigue. Much appreciared.

Have you tried other adapters (besides the C/Y to M adapter) in combination with the TechArt Pro adapter?
If yes, which ones fit and which ones don't? TIA

Mine was ordered 2/9, #597, if that helps. It had firmware rev 2.

@k-h.a.w, have not tried other adapters to M (other than the screw thread adapter required for the Summitar) as I don't have any such adapters.

I used it extensively yesterday, instead of the usual routine of magnify/focus peaking with adapted lenses, it was quite enjoyable to use and the focus seems to be spot-on.

A couple of times I didn't have the lens set at infinity so it couldn't obtain focus but that was user error. With a little use, setting lenses to infinity when mounting them will become second nature.

Having a manual override always available helped as well, for when I was shooting close-ups. I could adjust the lens to get things in range, and then back-button for AF to quickly nail the focus. This means the motor won't have to move the lens as much.

Do you buy the adapter on eBay?

This adapter should work with many of my old Olympus OM lenses, since they are small and lightweight.

Direct

Yes, OM lenses should work well.

Bear in mind it's not a speed demon in terms of the AF itself, but not having to focus magnify/peaking does save quite a lot of time. And having a built-in variable extension tube is very handy especially with rangefinder lenses that normally don't focus all that close.

Is 700g weight limit accurate on this? That is what their site says but I thought I remembered seeing a lighter figure. If accurate, then I could use my Leica 90/2 AA and 75/2 apo and that might be fun.

That's more of a recommendation than a limit, I suppose. At some point the lens could be supported and the camera moves back and forth.

Many thanks d-intrigue. For manual override do you have to set the menu to DMF or MF? TIA.

No, just turn the lens focus ring.

I have AF set to back button.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will get one of these adapters.

Anyone try this adapter with a non pdaf camera? I know it's not officially supported but was wondering if it work at all just slower.

I don't think it works at all on any model except A7-II and A7R-II

I checked the faq at techartpro.com, and it states very clearly that the adapter only supports AF with A7 II and the A7RII. This since the camera needs to support third party PDAF.

http://www.getdpi.com/forum/sony/57320-auto-focus-anything.html#post688118, quote:

"Got the adapter. It looks well made. Unfortunately, the past few months have not been exactly how I would have wanted them to be. I do not have an A7 II or the A7r ii as a result.

It *does* auto focus with a few E mount cams, albeit slowly and only with the default FL of 15mm. The best one is my monochrome NEX-5N, even better than an A7 or an A7s. It is quite amazing to see a 1956 Jupiter-3 5cm f/1.5 auto focusing!

The focus motor is quite powerful as they advertise and it is possible get one's finger (skin) getting caught in the focus mechanism (ouch!).

Overall (despite not yet knowing the full potential), i think it is a novelty.

I have a few samples made using the adapter but accessing my flickr acct appears to be impossible now."

bummer, I ordered mine on 2/12 and was #803. Let say 100 order a day, that's $30,000++ a day business at least for a short while, not bad at all. Now I wonder the delay of 3 days order will turn into how many days of waiting
