I will post examples from 3200, 6400 and 12800. Both with Chroma NR off and with default Chroma NR in LR.
EDIT: These are 100% crops so the 80D will appear more magnified. I added a second 6400 example where the cropping of the 80D was less to match the framing of the 7D2 but then both were output at 1400 px wide.
Unless my eyes deceive me the 7D2 shows less chroma noise. Look at the patterns on this feather in the first shot. Almost like banding. The 80D does not show that. I still prefer the 7D2 at this point.
Based on these samples I would say the 7D is showing a better high ISO results with the difference between the 7D -80D growing larger as the ISO increases
Still have not seen anything about the 80D that is making me think about switching from the 7D2
Actually, they look pretty comparable. Since I already own a 7d2, other canon bodies and a plethora of lenses, I guess I'll sit tight. Interesting comparison though.
I at least hoped 80D would show a lot less chroma, since 1DXII has lowered chroma a lot and I suspected it was going to be a feature of all the new Canon sensors. I'll definitely be waiting to see what the D500 can offer. Also would need to know things done like how the AF of the 80D and 7DII compare in longer bursts in AI servo, how they acquire lock on as contrast drops etc.
My observation:
It looks like the 80D renders brighter, thus the 7DII looks to have more contrast (definition) So the 80 will not look as defined as the 7D
Thanks for posting these; very significant advantage for 7D2 IMHO especially above 3200 ISO.
However, especially the 6400 ISO shot from 80D looks like something went wrong, a bit like camera shake or focus problem? So I wonder if we are seeing just the result of different sensors or if there are other factors involved.
One thing why f/16, well into diffraction softening on high pixel density APS-C. Also the 80D shots in the ISO 6400 case seem to have shake. High ISO looks a lot worse when an image is oof.
Looking from my eizo monitor both are very close that you will not remember the different, they have same amount of noise but 7D2 noise grains is a bit finer, especially when chroma NR applied.
Looking from my iphone 6 plus, 7D2 is obviously do a bit better.
kind of surprised by the worse looking high ISO files of the 80D
i know that this has already been shown at other tests, i.e. there is a cross over point around 1600iso, but the chroma noise seems particularly not good on the 80D given the rave reviews it seems to be getting
seems like a great introductory stills / video camera however - the smooth touch screen tracking ability seems to be the #1 feature

I just went for f/16 to be able to get a SS at 12800 and then kept it constant for the other shots. There are some focus issues between the images. Therefore I mainly concentrated on looking at the upper dark area that is long distance OOF background.
My conclusions are that the 80D does show worse chroma noise, no doubt about that. After chroma NR I find the two cameras to be very similar and without looking at 100% crops would be impossible to tell the difference.
I know this test isn't perfect and it shouldn't be used to assess sharpness as there are some focus issues on some of the shots. I'm not sure if the focus issues would affect the perceived noise or not. I think if you look at the OOF background it shouldn't matter about the focus issues on the subject.
I still will need more time with the camera to assess AF compared to the 7D2....probably a lot more time.
