Spent some more time with my lens - here is a video showing manual focus noise, which is much less, vs. auto focus.

There is a definite problem here! Even my 85L II with MB IV focuses a lot quicker even in low light.

I shot mine tonight at dusk of my family and it felt slow to me. Now maybe with the grinding issue it's slowing down the focus because of friction. That's my take on the slowness.

Yes, LoCA is quite noticeable on this image. This aberration is not easy to correct on such fast telephoto. (Owners of the EF 85/1.2L know how bad it can get wide-open)
However, in post-processing, LR's 'defringe' tool removed it immediately. (here is the corrected f/1.4 version)

The f/stops on the 85/1.4GM are a bit weird:

In one-third stop increments, it should go:

1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2

However, with the GM, it goes:

1.4, 1.6, 1.7 and 2

f/1.7 belongs to the one-half-stop f-number scale...

I sent a note to my dealer on the focusing noise to contact there Sony rep as well. Noise is not bothering me so bad but the slow AF is and this friction might be why. I read someone on dpr say it was as fast as his Batis 85 mine is not that fast.

These seem like broken copies (looking at the videos). Yes, not only the AF is slow but hunts like drunken rifleman.

I think it's hunting because the elements are slowed down in movement because it's hitting other metal and causing friction so it don't move the elements faster.

Yes they could very well be bad and they may have to be returned. Problem is Sony needs to get the message so they can adjust production line . If my dealer has another copy on hand I may exchange mine . But let's not take anything away from how the results are which are very good. Shit happens I've seen this in every brand out there, it's how they respond is what really counts. Of course this is all we will hear from the Nikon/Canon pundits. Which still amazes me why they would give a frack they have their own issues to deal with.

Yea it's not pleasant . I shot my daughter last night her pregnancy snaps she wanted and I was under the gun to get it done fast and my grandson was eating the dirt. Lol so it was obvious I was hearing it but like to put some more mileage on it and see if it works itself out . Not sure it can

Post those shots in a bit. Really nice bokeh on it. It's a very nice lens for sure but the noise can bother you. I love how no one picked up on this until it was shipped. Plenty of units getting tested out their, makes me wonder. Leave it to members to find the real issues. I said it out of the gate after I ran my test yesterday.

From my take the negatives are some CA till 2.8, focusing noise. The focus hold button was also hard to use on a vertical. I made that button a extra Eye AF and was tough to use. I wish they actually put 3 buttons. I like the Eye AF on the down AF/MF switch since I don't have to hold down a button. I'm going to change the lens button maybe to focus area or something else.

My biggest concern about the noise would be if it was caused by something that could result in minuscule shavings of plastic or metal and end up getting on the glass. One person who has been re-quoted multiple times heard from someone that their noise went away after a while, but I'd still need to know from Sony what the cause was before I'd keep mine otherwise there could be future problems. It's simply too expensive of an item to have problems out of the gate. Mine shows up in less than 5 hrs from Roberts/Indianapolis, hopefully it's from a different batch. No one would drive off a car lot hearing an unfamiliar noise and not turn right back around and get an answer, no matter how sexy the new car was. I still want to give Sony the chance to respond and want the oppty to evaluate this lens with an open mind vs the Batis, but given how good the Batis is and my troubles with the 35/1.4, I'm not going through that again.

Btw has anyone tried it on a different model cam. I'm picking up a A6300 today and will try it but nice to know if it still does it to cut that variable out

I'm with you on that. I can't in my heart buy that FE 35 1.4 for the fifth time. We certainly don't need another headache. I have plenty already

I got mine last night and shot snaps of the friends I was out with. I thought I got a silent copy but now testing it this morning in a quiet space it is definitely loud although not, to my ear, unpleasant. I find it to be nearly silent with manual focusing. It also sort of "spins down" when you shut the camera off.

Otherwise the focus speed seems standard for the Sony FE series.

I found the culprit. Look at this image . There are 3 slots in groups of 2 where the lens goes back and forth to focus inside those 3 sections is a rotational thread that rotates 360 degrees. If you look where I have the 2 V's marked inside there i can see BARE metal. That is where the friction is coming from.

So leave lens on camera, turn it on, got to MF with your iPhone light on, Look for any of the 3 section 2 slots and look inside that and rotate the focus ring you see bare metal gearing that rotates around. That is where the issue is.

I Found the culprit. Turn camera on with lens , get your iPhone out turn light on go to manual focus you will see 3 main groups of 2 slots that surround the inside of the lens where the lens travels back and forth. Now while your are moving the focusing ring inside those slots you will see a gear that rotates around the lens. See my 2 Vs look there and watch the ring. On mine I can clearly see bare metal and that is where the friction is happening. Now that I see that clearly mine is being returned as soon as my dealer has one. I also pointed them to this thread. Let us know what you are seeing folks. There is no scratches anywhere else the one lens we saw from Asia is not the same issue, thats damage somewhere else as I do not see anything but that gear as the culprit.

If anyone has a source to Sony please forward this thread link immediately to them.
