p.1 #1 · More Real Shoot Examples from D5

Just completed a weekend of shooting cheer. Over 30,000 images taken in just two days. The D5 performed like a champ. Here are the pros and cons at a glance along with some real shoot samples under a variety of ISOs under consistent Par Can lighting which IMO is really a better way to judge since you don't have to deal with the inconsistency of cycling indoor lights which will always be bad no matter what the camera is.

Pros...
1) The AF is amazing. Hardly missed a shot and everything is tack sharp. This under erratic moving cheerleaders that are moving fast.

2) ISO, of course. For me, ISO 8,000 all the way to 25,600 is not only acceptable... it's very usable. Starts to breakdown a bit after that, but still usable to 51,200 with a little massaging. I will let you be the judge.

3) 16,000 shots under a single battery charge. Minimal preview time, high speed drive, high ISO of course, Active-D set to low.

4) Buffer is unreal. Never fills up.

5) Preview of images in camera... also unreal. Hold onto the button and you can scroll through photos as fast as the camera shoots.

6) Touch screen is cool and nice. Don't know how practical it will be under time constraints. Zoom in and out feature is kinda cool. Still, I think the buttons are faster.

7) The amount of custom function buttons that you can assign frequent commands to has increased from ONE to FOUR. Lots of options!

Cons...
1) Voice memo no longer exists. Sort of. You have to assign it to Fn3 on the back. So, you gain a custom function button, but lose it just as quick if you are a voice memo guy like me.

2) Creating and displaying in camera folders for all you event shooters... a little different. If you put this in your custom menu, you'll have to put both storage folder and playback folder in the menu as well. You create the folder in the storage folder menu. You display it in the playback folder menu. It's now a two menu process. It's different. Not a drawback, really, just different. The con really is that if you choose to SEE your display folder in the menu, you can only review pix in that folder. You cannot review photos from a different folder unless you change playback to ALL, but then the current folder doesn't display either. You can't have it both ways... at least not that I can figure out yet.

I have to explore a lot more. I immediately only researched the items that I needed so this is a very SHORT list. Onto the samples... I gave both an edited version showing what can be done with a little NR and some editing as well as links to the original out of camera photos. Images were shot with a 70-200 with shutter speeds ranging from 1000 to 4000 at f/2.8 to f/4.5. Before you say... wow, the lighting was really good. It actually wasn't. But when you push the camera to ISO 51K, it opens up the options to shoot at a high shutter and stopped down aperture. We were regularly shooting at ISO 5000 at SS 1000 wide open this weekend. Not the worst indoor lighting, but definitely not the best. Camera Kelvin was set at 3000K which wound up being a tad warm, but we kept it since the athletes like a warmer shot. In-Camera sharpening set to 6/9, saturation +1, contrast – 1. All images shot at JPG Medium, NORM... so even more room for improvement shooting Large FINE or even RAW.

Photos were edited in PS, with sharpening at 100% at a radius of 0.3 and threshold 0.0. Topaz DeNoise set to moderate.

Here are the edited photos with ISO settings. Original links with no downsizing at the end.

Paul,

Thank you for taking the time to --

1) Thoroughly put the camera through the paces in a real-life scenario
2) Detail what you see as the pros & cons of the D5
3) Share some incredible images
4) Link to originals for us to draw our own conclusions about the camera.

I still shudder when I see 5-digit ISO values, but my D3s and D4 bodies have made me a firm believer that there is nothing to be afraid of any more. And now that I see these, I am completely convinced that (imagine Milo Hamilton saying this) "There is a new low light king ... and it's the Nikon D5."

What amazes me most is the color on the high ISO photos. 12,800 looks like ISO 4,000. 51,200 is incredible. Thinking about bad football and soccer fields.

Thanks again for the thoroughness of your post. You are -- and will continue to be -- the man.

Rick

Thanks Paul...

Excellent review and images,

Finally somebody has posted images from the D5 that do the camera justice and show, as you stated, real world use.

No need to analyze these!

Nice set, Paul. Good to see you again. You're lucky I'm honest or I and that body would have vanished after I gave you that break.

Question: Did you use Auto-ISO this weekend?

Hey Kev... I toyed with it for a routine or two, but it's just not reliable enough at any metering mode. Works great as center weighted with neutral uniform tops like sting rays. But for black or white tops... just wasn't reliable enough to fully trust it even with setting an ISO delimiter. So I went full manual.

Did you go out with everyone last night? I had to crash. I was back to work today for a half day.

Thanks for the info. No, I dropped Wayne at the hotel and stayed with family last night, then an early departure for our road trip to PA.

Here is plain old ISO 5000 which was pretty much the baseline this weekend. The critics commented that there was no marked improvement at the lower ISOs below 6400. I disagree.

Paul:

Excellent image...and we all know there are critics of cameras and then there are photographers who know how to use them.

It's nice to see examples from the D5 instead of reading about its shortcomings ( before it was ever released ) from those who will probably never use this camera ( or the 1Dx Mark II ) in a professional environment.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. Great work!

I'm heading out to a track meet tomorrow afternoon. Probably won't need high ISO, but I'm excited to play around with AF options.

Thanks for the review. I'm committed to Canon right now, but it is interesting to see what the other bodies can do.

Even more important for me was to see your unedited and edited shots. The quality of the post-processed image is top notch and shows I still have a long way to go in learning how to get the most out of my images.

I'm years away from a 1Dx or II but seeing what Nikon offers and has offered in the realm of low light high ISO capabilities, makes me rethink Canon...

A decade ago 1600 was pushing it and people complaining about 12,000 makes me cringe.

These are beautiful shots. Technology is a wonderful thing (when it works) 😂 Keep up the great work!!!

I remember when my D3s first arrived thinking that the ISO performance was amazing...and in my opinion it looked worse at 3200 ISO than this.

Still waiting to see how the D500 looks.

Amazing high ISO pictures!! Thank you so much for educating us on this toy (which I will not be able to afford) but it is certainly great to know where modern camera tech is.

Thanks once again. FM is such a great place.

Out of the images posted on FM so far of the new Canon 1DX II, the high isos don't hold a candle to the D5. I just saw some inmages posted at iso 8000 that didn't look half as clean as Paul's images here that were shot at iso 25,600. The images here shot at 12,800 should beat anything shot with the 1DX II.

Are you comparing Paul's original files? Or the images he posted here?

In addition to being a masterful youth sports photographer in terms of timing and framing action, Paul is even more masterful with his post editing. So be sure to compare apples to apples. I'll bet anything Paul could make 1DX2 files look near equivalent to D5 files shot at the same ISO as far as noise is concerned. His skill (and self restraint) in post is part of the magic that makes his images stand out, IMHO.

Thanks for the kind words FL. Even more important is the lighting. Cycling indoor sodium vapors can make any image look terrible at even low ISOs. Madmat... do you have a link with those images?

BTW... now with the camera in my possession for well over a month, I can tell you that the images at high ISO are legit, but... but...

... but yeah, the images definitely have issues at low ISO in terms of dynamic range. I found the DR to be better with the D4, and as expected, the D800. Best DR still out there though is still coming from the Nikon D3x... that was (is) one sweet camera!

I'm a Canon guy but these images are great. My girlfriend's daughter does cheer and I'm her official photographer. lol I only have a 5D2 and have to limit things at like 3200 ISO to get a cleaner shot but at the expense of shutter speed. (yeah, lighting always sucks bad) Seeing these images makes me want now more than ever to step up into a camera with much higher capabilities. -No Nikon yet.

I especially like the background they used at your event. At the ones here it is basic black and red and not quite tall enough to keep from getting lots of lights in the shots when they are on shoulders, which really sucks.

Paul, I had one of the pre-release D5 models here for a week, and on it, just as every other body I use, I actually do a custom WB no matter the venue. I only mention this as you turned towards the lighting type and color a bit in your comments.. If you're not doing this. I would strongly encourage this practice and either save your venues under the 9(?) available slots.

Great set by the way.. I don't look at Canon's images anymore with a hint of green. The D5 has set a new benchmark IMO.
