p.1 #1 · LP-E19 and 4K60

Does anyone know for a fact if the new LP-E19 1DX2 battery is required in order to record at 4K60, or if it's just a nice-to-have with better capacity? I understand you need a CFast card, but my focus is on the battery.

Thanks for anyone with empirical evidence at this early time

Just in case anyone else wondered, yes you can use the old batteries and still get 4K60 as long as you use CFast.

Off topic but I figured this info could be worth a share

For those looking for an additional LP-E19 battery, UniquePhoto has it in stock for $145 + free shipping: https://www.uniquephoto.com/product

I'm not sure if this is a price mistake but worth a try since everyone else sells it for $169 and most places are still out of stock.

I ordered one from them the first day I got the camera and they shipped it out right away.

I thought the only difference was you drop from 14fps max to 12fps max, no?

Either way I am very happy my old batteries will still work. I only plan to have two of the new ones.

Well, given that there is no definitive answer to it, and that it may be interesting to know, I figured I'd ask. One month and zero answers later, I answered my own question.

Nobody over the years successfully answered the question about the difference between the 1D3 and 1DX batteries, as there's not even a drop in the frame rate. Of course with the 1DX2 they had to physically change the battery so that it won't charge on older chargers. I wonder how unavoidable that was...

I may be wrong but I think I got that fact off of one of the Canon 1DX II videos.

I can't bear the suspense - what was the reason for making the batteries physically different? Do spill the beans

From Canon's website:

"New LP-E19 battery pack

• Can be used in EOS-1D X Mark II

• Can be used in previous EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1D Mark IV, and EOS-1D X

• Must be charged with new LC-E19 charger (with red stripe on charger’s top surface)

Previous LP-E4 and LP-E4N battery packs for EOS-1D series

• Can be used in EOS-1D X Mark II
Note: EOS-1D X Mark II maximum shooting speed will drop to approximately 12 fps

• Can be used in previous EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1D Mark IV, and EOS-1D X

• Can be charged with any of the battery chargers for EOS-1D series: LC-E4, LC-E4N or the new LC-E19 charger

At 2700 mAh, this battery has about 10% higher capacity than its predecessor, the LP-E4N battery pack"

That's exactly what they had in the video - so unless you have to shoot at 14fps - who cares? I guess 10% more juice doesn't hurt.

Dumb question - should the batteries be completely drained the first time for "learning purposes" or just charge anytime?

Doesn't answer why they had to change the battery pins in such a way that only the new charger can charge them. I have three of the old chargers which are now useless for travel etc.

Just got my new 1Dx II's today and looking at the charger they took away the small port to plug in a 12 volt cord. Looking through the manual it does not show a accessory to convert to 12 volt. It does not show any accessories for the camera. on Canon web page has listed

"Battery Charger LC-E19

Two battery packs can be attached. It takes about 170 minutes to charge one LP-E19 battery pack (140 minutes for LP-E4 or LP-E4N). It plugs directly into AC outlets. Not compatible with the Car Battery Cable CB-570." Cost $540.00
