My 20D locked up with Firmware 1.0.2 several times, updated to 1.0.5 and it's still locking up. I do have the battery grip installed and even put Loctite on the thumb wheel to keep it from backing off as it would no stay tight, still locks up. As far as focusing the camera appears to have a mind of it's own and appears to randomly select front, rear and occasionally spot on focus. I have experienced this with my 70-200 mm IS L lense and my 17-40 mm L lense. I have selected One Shot and Center focus point. I've even read the Owners Manual from cover to cover and am at the point where I'm going to send this back to Canon to deal with this. Reminds me a lot of my previous Canon 10D, but worse. I spoke with canon tech today about the lock up issue in FW 1.0.5 and they suggested I send in the camerra for an inspection implying that it is not a firmware issue but rather the way it is handled before it arrives to the customer or the store.
When I asked whether the circumstances under which i experienced the lockup had any significance they couldn't say.
My lock upo happened when I was changing paranters in the menu between shots.
The only way to shut down was to disconnect the battery.
Oh yes it was in the studiuo and I was hooked up to a third party studio strobe which worked fine on my 10D and the 20d except for the lock up during menu operations ( the 20 d that is).
I like the camera and want to buy another one but needles to say I need a tool I can trust.
Any ideas on how long one should wait or whether Canon will fix this in future firnmware updates ?
