p.1 #1 · 20D poll - issues anyone?

Given the number of active discussions with respect to the 20D, I thought it may be worthwhile run a poll to establish how happy or unhappy some of us early adopters of the 20D are feeling. Are there some issues somebody looking to buy a 20D needs to be mindful of?

For the poll, I would like to ask :-

1. For cameras with lockup issues, please mention if you are using the battery grip, the type of CF card(s) used and whether you are shooting JPEG or RAW at the time the camera had the lockup.

2. For cameras with focus issues, please mention if it is a case of consistent front/back focus with the centre AF point or any other particular AF point(s).

3. For cameras with random focus issues (which I know of at least one case), the camera for some reasons will select by itself another AF point. As an example, if you used the centre AF point, another part of the image seems to be clearly in focus rather than the centre AF point, and it is quite evident the in focus part of the image can be mapped to another AF point.

My 20d locked up while i was shooting raw. Fimrware 1.05
The lockup occured when I was changing the parameters.(part of my initial test)
I am planing to send it back since it puts a bit of distrust in the gear and makes it hard to work underthose conditions.
I wish I could keep it and know it will be corrected ny a future firmware update.
But like I have read here it might be wise top wait for a while and buy later when the situation has been coprrected.

I've had no lockups.
No focus issues.
I'm still using the original firmware that came on the camera, 1.0.2.

I'm a very happy first adopter

I had my first real lockup today shooting Hi jpg with a 75-300 USM lens and Lexar CF card 32X. I've done all of the firmware upgrades and this is the first lockup I've had. I've had the 20D for three weeks and have shot about 2000 pictures...

Upgraded to 1.0.5 and yes still having minor lockups and no, repeat no type or brand of AA battery will give more than 8 exposures with the grip. a major issue.

Oh well we didn't have that option w/10D grip....AA batteries!
buy some cheap generic canon batteries

and your problems are over, forget the AA

No lockups, still on v 1.0.2. I change lenses all the time, sometimes pull CF to download, sometimes use USB. So far it works as advertised and within the limits of any other machine I've encountered.

When I suspect my AF is boning me I switch to manual, works every time.

1 lockup, 1.02 firmware, no grip, Sandisk Ultra II in the camera when it locked up, only Canon lenses have been on the camera so far, I have also used an IBM Microdrive.

So far so good. I am struggling with whether to get the grip to get the vertical shutter button. A side question: I have read somewhere that the grip can be used with a single battery. Does anyone know whether that is true or not?

Have Fun,

Yes Rick, one 511, 511A 512 or 514 in either grip compartment, or of course two.

With AA batteries the warning is operating temperatures below 20C may affect operation, or the camera may even fail to operate.

Yes, kidding Ricardo, that pic look soft? lol...I'm actually getting super pics from it now...and you know how I like fine detail...helluva nice camera...it has a quirk here and there but don't they all? lol I really like how small it is. It's just a different camera that requires different processing...fred will have a 20dCSPro out soon btw...can't wait as the 1dmk2cspro really cut down on my processing time on the 1dmk2 files and was magic as far as i'm concerned.

Just got the new 20D, but so far no issues at all. Great focusing, no lockups. It came with 1.02 and I immediately upgraded when I received the camera.

From reading here ...looks like the firmware updates are just BS .
I hope they will fix the lockup problem soon.
I have had two lockups ..no big deal
I have not upgraded the firmware yet..see no reason to as the the updates do not do anything to improve the lock up issue
