They do things just a little different in Japan, so the first challenge for me with this weeks assignment was figuring out what the heck a fire hydrant looked like here. Turns out, this is the answer, although the design on the cover varies a bit from city to city.
The plate reads on the left "Toyonaka-city", and on the right "Fire Hydrant"

I have no idea how they work, but it looks like if you push that tab at the bottom, it will swing open. These are frequently in the street, and I'm not sure if it's illegal to park on top of them either...
