I really like the vertical and the width. Only the bottom 10% of the image doesn't contribute. I disagree that a horizontal of the top half would be a better shot. You be focused on the 'action' per se, but would lose the incredible leading lines of the ridge leading to the butte. It's rare to get such naturally perfect leading lines with a background like this. It's great that you took advantage of it.
I agree with a crop but a 4x5 crop would lose too much of the bottom to where you'd lose a bit of the sense of place. I'd do a 4x3 crop just to lose the very bottom of the frame.
Love it! I think portrait landscape pics usually have viable alternative crop options and I do agree there are also great 1x1 and 4x5 options to this pic.

A big huge thank you to everyone! I really appreciate the feedback.
This could end up hanging somewhere very exciting soon. If so, I'll keep folks posted!
I knew some would want a crop and others would like it as is. As I mention in the initial post, I tend to really like uber wide sweeping images but agree an alternative cropped version would work well too. I appreciate the suggestions there. I might end up doing two versions...
If it was cropped to roughly square then I would be looking at a good shot with lots of action, however, with presentation as it is then I feel as if I could just scramble down that slope and be right in the image amongst the action, much more dramatic this way.
