So a while back, the owner of my favourite breakfast location took her first vacation in almost a decade, going on a 17 day cruise for her birthday.. She left her daughter in charge - the first time she'd look after the family business on her own.
While the owner was away a host of problems happened, almost all at once - one of the stoves stopped working on a holiday, a major ice-storm knocked out power on a Sunday (their busiest day), a skylight in the kitchen failed and they came in to a pile of snow and water.
It was chaos, and the poor daughter had to deal with it all, and NOT tell her mom, or else her mom would have flown home from whatever her next port of call was, and her daughter KNEW she needed the break. But it was hard.
I go here 4-5 days a week. I was witness to all the problems. On day 10, I made a joke 'we should do a shoot'. On day 14, when the skylight failed, she actually came over and said - "so, were you serious?" I said yes, I have an idea...
I pulled this together in 2 days. Used a combination of staff and friends/models. The only thing I couldn't get that I really wanted was a gorilla suit (for a chef).
And I knew we had to get it in very, very few takes, because my friend Brian could only take so much maple syrup (yes, we used real maple syrup - which after the shoot, he had down to his socks). Ultimately this was 3 shots, and the owner's daughter is the one in the foreground with her 'hand in the till'.
I was able to make the photo, frame it and we gave it to the owner as a birthday gift the day she got home, along with a card that read, "Happy Birthday, hope you had a wonderful trip; you can never go away again."
After which, her daughter explained everything that had gone wrong.
