Exactly it's funny that people think that gear makes a person a pro. Making income from your photos is what makes you pro
Who thinks this? I have never actually seen this position stated here on FM that I can remember. After all, the most appropriate definition of professional to this discussion is "participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs."
Of course, being a professional does not imply one is a better photographer than an amateur. I imagine many amateurs take photos for personal fulfillment and not to make a living because they have other professional opportunities.

Yup, shouldn't be a big issue, at least not up here. Sounds like Nikon did a decent job with production. Everything should be pretty well on time as expected.
I'll be at the store when they open on Tuesday to pick mine up.

Awesome, congrats - let me know how you like it. I wish I had a need for a D500 but with 90% of my work portraits, landscapes, and real estate I just can't justify it.
Just dropped by my retailer and he expects to distribute on the 26th. He claimed that even if he receives his shipment early (this week), he will be embargoed from delivering before the 26th. Based on my schedule that would make late next week before I can get my hands on mine. Too bad, I'm shooting Baseball Tuesday night and would like to have put it through it's paces in the stadium for longer shots but I won't be able to get it in time.

I remember reading somewhere that if you make 50% of your annual income you're classified as a professional photographer. Just because someone has "pro gear" doesn't make them a professional was my point. I own a d800 and canon 1div but I consider myself an advanced amateur. Yeah I know just because someone is a "professional" doesn't mean that they take better photos.

Will also be eager to hear impressions, especially alongside the D810 in terms of ISO and AF performance!

B&H is saying that they expect to ship some D500's out on Apr 21, but that those will all go to NPS members. They won't begin shipping to others until May 3rd
I wonder if it has to do with their closing on the 21 due to Passover. Ugh, I'm going to pull my hair out if my pre-order, which I bit the bullet on within an hour of it being available to pre-order, doesn't ship until May 3.
I am sure the first run of cameras have already shipped pre-earthquake, but I wonder how this may impact availability for future runs?
A Nikon representative offered a statement to PopPhoto.com: "Our thoughts are with the people of this region. The part suppliers for Nikon products were affected by the series of earthquakes, and this will likely impact our production and supplies. We are investigating the situation, and will announce the details as soon as they are confirmed"

Yes- it's due to their closing for the Passover. Adorama will be closed for a similar time.

There are many pro's that don't even know how to use a flash. Might want to separate pros into "paid photographers" and professionals.
I'll be interested to see if anyone actually gets a camera tomorrow, since that would be before the official Nikon release date according to the local Nikon rep.

Here in the US, the official release date is today (4/21). What's the official date for Canada?
