That first photo is with the JJC LN-RC49, which is a replacement hood for the Pentax DA 40/2.8, right?

Yes, that's it.

Does that work well on your RX1Rii? No vignetting?

I just double-checked and I am not seeing any vignetting with any of these (although the Bronica compendium shade will vignette if one cranks it out far enough.) But you can judge for yourself (both photos exposed at 1/640 and f8, with the focus distance ~8 feet, then processed using Raw Therapee 4.2.1234 with all corrections turned off):

Without the JJC LN-RC49 hood:

With the JJC LN-RC49 hood:

Note: All three of these hoods work well on my RX1, but I don't have an RX1RII yet, so I can't say for certain that they will work well on it, too. That said, the two cameras do share the same lens, so it's a reasonable assumption....

Thanks, very clever! I never thought to try that. I think I'll be doing a transplant with my DA 40.

Fred, I have sort of found a way to do this. I have Custom 1 set to AM/MF Control Hold, Right Button set to AM/FM Ctrl Toggle, and AEL to eye focus.
When dial set to M, Custom 1 Button does my "back focus". When I want to use auto focus, Right Button toggles it back and forth. While toggled to Auto, the AEL does eye focus. Touching Right Button puts it back in manual.
Not exactly what you were looking for, but it works well. That way I can keep the front dial to M and still toggle Manual or Auto,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it today.

It's the digital Ermanox!!

I am having alot of fun with the RXrii, and am very impressed, despite the various oblivious oversights: batteries and holding focus on restart etc. Those annoyances pale in comparison to the ground glass original, of course, which Salomon used to invent modern photojournalism. He switched to the Leica as soon as the F/2 lens was available, but that was a small camera too.

I often hand it to whoever and coach them through eye-AF.

Jeff helped me alot with his simple rules for focus in various situations:
Jeff Kott wrote:
I have a very simplistic approach to focusing my RX1Rii.

If I'm going to be shooting people, focus area is set to wide with Face Detect on with continuous AF. Done.

AEL button is set to Eye AF and when I'm at portrait distance I use Eye AF. If it can't lock on an eye, it defaults to Face Detect.

For shots without people, I use AF-S, flexible spot medium for all distances short of infinity. For infinity, I switch to Manual Focus and use focus magnification to nail infinity focus.

I may buy the camera from my client who hates it: What no, zoom?

But I guess I need to really check for centering, jeez.

How will that be effected by aperture? Are those testing doing so WO? Edges are a tad soft there anyway. Does 5.6 mask decentering at all?

There isn't a solution for battery performance with the RX1 series aside from carrying 2 extras and setting Display Quality to 'Standard' (Pre-focus off, and lower the display brightness) .
However, there is a way to make the lens hold focus. Instead of turning the camera off, set it to go to sleep after 10 seconds or 1 minute. When it comes back from sleep, it will remember your manual focus setting. Not ideal but it works.

I have tested many RX1R and RX1RII cameras they were all very centered. It's not something to worry about with this camera/lens but I would still test it at around f/2.8 to make sure.

TY so much Fred. I did notice the return from sleep focus and should have mentioned it, however it did seem to work most of the time but I thought a few times it did not. But Jeff taught me the AF and I did not pursue further testing. Anyway it's a important point for zone shooters, and perhaps that is on purpose for them. Did the RX1 first version act this way also?

Great to hear about the centering, and I am so relieved to hear many newer lenses are not seeing these issues, and that even the variation of the 55/1.8 and 16-35 is actually "average" compared to Canikon designs.

I shot the RX1rii again last night. It is just fantastic in a social setting. I did not have to work near has hard as usual, and left the other bodies home.

Have you tried focusing it via the macro ring and/or using the macro ring as a focus-range limiter? If not, see this thread.

Absolutely fantastic info on that thread! I've played with the macro ring for close-ups but never tried it for other distances!
Thank you,
Fred

Does all that apply to RX1r2 also, before I break this one

Yes it seems to!

OK zone focus for RX1x is ON!!

Design PDF is also great, I has not seen that, and it reminded me of the thumb grip. The sony thumb grip is more expensive than the thumbsup option...

any feedback on these or others?

A while back, B&H was selling the thumb grip and hood for $78 each and I was fortunate to get both. I have never taken them out of the camera as they are great additions. The thumb grip gives a nice support while keeping the system small and light in comparison to adding a bracket with a grip.
You may find third party solutions for much less.

An OEM thumb grip came with my first RX1 when I bought it used, but it fit loosely in the hot shoe even when locked and after about a year, it fell out one day while I was out with my dog and I didn't notice until I was back home, so that was that.

I thought about buying another one, but after looking at how I typically hold the camera, I decided that I would actually be better served with a slightly better front grip instead.

Not finding any made specifically for the RX1, I bought the OEM Sony AGR2 accessory grip for the RX100 series cameras for $15 on eBay and then modified the OEM RX1 grip so I could attach it as well using the supplied sticky tape:

http://www.canyonero.com/files/1480139354.jpg

It's securely mounted -- there's zero change of it ever falling off! -- and I find it works better for me than the thumb grip did. Plus, unlike the grip, it doesn't catch on anything when I stuff the camera into a pants or coat pocket.

I wonder why Sony decided to go grip-less with the RX1. It would probably increase weight somewhat but it would not really bother anything. I believe the team relied on the thumb grip as their best support option since the beginning design stages.

I also own the all metal RRS bracket with grip and it's amazing but it does increase bulk and weight (about 140g). I think the Sony thumb grip is very overpriced at $250 but its an elegant solution and it's very well built. I'm surprised yours came apart.

I thought that on the Rx1rii they would put in a little more grip, and increase the battery somewhat with the extra room as the battery in panned constantly.

With Sony it's sadly always something to worry about. Both my original RX1 and later the RX1RII had to be replaced because of decentering.
If you also look at the A7 series: most of the FE lenses that I owned and tried were decentered to some degree. Even their "pro" GM lenses. Sony just doesn't seem to care.

The RX1RII lost some interested once Sony raised its price to $3,900!

It seems that this is a permanent price increase.

Its a lot of money ... that's for sure. I would like to replace a Ricoh GR with something better, and I guess that Ricoh will not offer anything comparable to the RX1 ... and there is really nothing much else happening in the Fixed Lens Camera segment - other than the Leica Q or Fuji X100, both a little ho-hum. Very odd, its either an iPhone or an ILC these days.

Hoping for a stylised RX1, with a little "SLR-Style" EVF hump, polished silver top, a pop-up flash and overall general good/cool looks.

Really would like to replace the Ricoh GR with something that has better AF and resolution, I guess the RX1 is all thats available? Perhaps that is why the price is as high as it is ...

Strangely, this appears to be the first time I can remember where I was rewarded for being an early adopter - very much against the common wisdom at the time of Sony dropping its prices significantly after a year or so.

I was saving to buy an RX1RII . . . and then they bumped the price. Sad day in my world. I won't pay the new higher price. I really liked the RX1, but the AF was bad, so that's what *most* appealed to me about the RX1RII. Hmph!

If you're patient and watchful, you can get a used one for much less. I got mine last month for $2600, pretty much like new.
