p.54 #1 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF
Brought the Rx1rII to a wedding this weekend (as a guest)...was curious to see how it would work out as part of my rationale in picking the RX1RII was to use as a second (or third) body if/when I get back into weddings.
Long story short....it performs wells enough where it matters. AF is on point, and low light performance is fantastic. Used a Nissin i40, bounced off rear walls.

I've been using my Coolpix A (with a "28mm" lens) for about one year now, and used a 28Ti for a long time. While I do like the immersive field of view and the immense DOF, frequently I find that I can not physically get close enough to a subject to render it in sharp detail. So the RX1 with 35mm lens and the 42Mp sensor has some appeal to me. Nikon did make a 35Ti. Sony should make an RX1 with a 24mm and a 55mm lens. Or, I guess the A7RII fits that bill.

In fact the Coolpix A is so immersive, I can be sitting 6 feet from someone and they cannot hear the shutter. So an RX1 with a 24mm lens and the 42Mp sensor could be quite useful for candid social situations - lending some cropability and relatively deep depth of field.

I was concerned about using a 28mm lens, but I have found that I enjoy it. Before purchasing the Q I owned a Fuji X-T1 and my favorite lens was the 16mm F1.4 which equates to a 24mm FF lens. Based on that the switch to 28mm was pretty easy.

I own the Gariz half case and I think it's okay. It extends the height of the camera, giving you more to grip at the bottom.
However I still find the bump they added for the front grip a bit too small for my liking. I'll still use it as I don't think there's any other good grips/cases out for the II yet.
As for the hood, I use this and find it works pretty well:

I wouldn't buy the Gariz case for the mk II.
While Sony's own case made for the mk I was terrible and expensive, making third party cases very attractive, the current official Sony case for the mk II is much better suited and a better value at protection and comfort compared to third parties.
MK I Sony case RXB did not have a way of accessing the battery door nor the side ports and it had a protruding bottom screw.
MK II Sony case RXH allows you not only to access the battery door, but also the side ports (for charging a battery, for example) and it has a flush screw at the bottom and it appears to also be a bit more padded.
If you want luxury, for either a MK I or a MK II, I highly suggest getting a JnK bridle leather case. You won't access any doors with it and to take it in or out (for the screw version) you need a coin. It's operability is akward but the feel and fit of it are the best of the lot. Seen one and I can say it is really, really good...but it is a luxury item not following the bauhaus ideals.
Worth noting that while you may never use the complete case (with the lens cover) I believe the half case to be still a very good value with regards to the practicality of using the camera.
PS: I've owned many Gariz cases and they have all been great, but $180 for the current model is a bit much, I think.
EDIT 2:
For hoods, I've had 3, but only 2 are worthy of attention.
Mounts on the bayonet. Very good feel and fit. I got this to make a fluid switch between the hood and the UWA 075 wide angle adapter, which at the moment is under a professional service to modify it to fit the RX1 perfectly (instead of the DIY solution on another thread)
3rd: Zeiss Flektogon 35mm hood with 49mm thread at the back.

I agree with these comments. The case is good quality and I like the looks of it. But you shouldn't expect it to change the ergonomics of the camera much. It adds a slight amount of bulk, as one would expect, but not so much that you don't adjust to it within a few minutes. Since I actually had the Gariz case before I bought the camera, I put it on immediately after unboxing the camera (even before taking any photos). I never knew the difference in feel until I took it off a few days ago and realized how slim the camera is without out it. Not a huge margin, but noticeable.
Access to the battery is fairly easy. You lose access to the side ports. I never use them so that was no concern for me. I like it and have no regrets, mostly since it adds some protection to the most expensive electronic device I've ever owned.
The new Fotodiox grip looks like a nice alternative, with much better ergonomics. You lose protection to the sides of the camera, of course. But I might pick one up and see which I prefer on any given day.

I am actually waiting for a grip L-plate for the RX1RII.
Yes, after looking at the options, I'm thinking the grip on the Gariz half case is too puny to do much good and looking at the other grips, it seems that the RRS grip + L plate gives the most functionality. I can just use the beefy grip and bottom plate when I want a more secure grip and add the L plate component when I want to shoot on tripod in portrait orientation.
The Fotodiox hood looks like a good alternative to the Sony. Does anyone have any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of a rectangular hood vs. round?

Quick question regarding camera bit depth: I just opened an RX1RM2 .ARW image in RawDigger that shows channel values from 0-16k, indicating 14bits per channel.
The EXIF, however, says otherwise (below only a selection of pertinent fields from Exiftool):
Camera Model Name : DSC-RX1RM2
Software : DSC-RX1RM2 v1.00
Bits Per Sample : 12
Compression : Uncompressed
Exposure Time : 2
F Number : 5.6
ISO : 100
Compressed Bits Per Pixel : 6
I don't know what to make of this. Is the EXIF information garbage, and what does the "compressed bits per pixel" mean, which seems to contradict the "uncompressed" mode and does not equal 12 or 14 bits (6+6+6=18?).
I would prefer just for the EXIF to be wrong, and the camera working as specified in 14bits, but curious to learn if somebody has already investigated. Are there any other settings that I may have overlooked to cause the camera to work in 12bit mode?
RAW images recorded with this camera have a resolution of 14 bits per pixel. However,
resolution is limited to 12 bits in the following shooting modes:
[ Long Exposure NR]
[BULB]
Continuous shooting (including continuous shooting in [Superior Auto] mode.)
As your exposure was 2 secs, long expose NR would have kicked in if you had it on
Mike
(It's the same as the A7r2, except that silent mode on that camera is also 12 bit and the RX1R2 doesn't have silent mode)

Thank you - the [ Long Exposure NR ] setting was the culprit here. Off it goes.
Continuous shooting is a bummer, as with 42MP I prefer to stick with the "best of three" rule to pick the sharpest consecutive shot. I first applied this when I got the D800e, doubled my keeper rate at slower shutter speeds. Looks like that is going to be a trade-off vs. 14bit, it will take some experimentation to see which one is more important in the real world. I suspect I might sacrifice bit depth and preserve sharpness.
p.54 #16 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF
That 12-bit drop is a real bummer. What is the explanation behind it? The reason why it is so. Because I do mostly long exposures and it is a real issue.

Who here already sent their RX1RII to be replaced and fix the light leak?
Did you return it through your dealer or talked directly with Sony?
How did it all go and how long did it take?

I returned it via Sony. It took 9 days, end to end. I'm in Seattle, 6 days for the package to get to Sony (FedEx ground (?) label provided), they returned a new box via overnight shipping. Processing time two days.
Overall happy with the procedure, Sony doing the right thing.
