I have been pumping the 'Great 28' across various forums, Guy would attest to that, the 28 f/2 is a great bargain, and I agree that to me, it comes closer to the Rx1 rendering then the 35mm f/2.8 Zeiss, however, the Rx1 kills it. Easily. In my opinion and in the way of shooting I do. Ask me which is the better combo, a A7R mII with a 28mm f/2 or a Rx1, and I'll say the Rx1 in easy victory. But take it with a grain of salt I suppose, as I am probably the BIGGEST FANGURL there

Whew! I long thought I was the only one to think that the RX-1 wasn't as stellar at infinity. Now I have company of the most distinguished kind.

As we drove around a corner nearby Dixon New Mexico, I saw this scene as the sun was begging to set. I IMMEDIATLY pulled over and shot it, this image has minimal post processing, I did add some contrast, I love me some contrast.

I went to manual focus and was very close to infinity as I locked onto the little mountain which has a Cemetery in it.

This is just more reason for me, to just love how the Rx1 renders a scene.

The RX1 I owned had an issue at infinity in the mid-zone area and only on the right side. I have seen some posted examples of a similar mid-zone dip but I do wonder if some of this might be due to sample variation and that famous Sony quality control. It will be interesting to see if your infinity tests show a universal issue everywhere or just in the mid zone (and if there, if it's on both sides or just one).

Great shots Lucinda!
RX1 Zeiss 35/2 is indeed special and currently there is no compact FE native lens that matches it.
The lens is not 'perfect' though. I see some distortion/LoCA/CA and at infinity it's not as stellar. (I will post examples soon)

What makes it so special? IMO, the ability to isolate the main focal point with high contrast/sharpness in the focus area and low contrast + smoothness in the OOF region. In macro mode, the background just melts.

Yes it is very tempting to shoot wide open with the RX1.

But please do comparison shots of landscape at infinity. I've read a few reports claiming the FE35/2.8 performs better than the RX1 for distant subjects, and that the RX1 was only good for close-up and mid-range shots. I find that hard to believe from my experience, but I'm very curious about those claims.

Not long after the FE 35/2.8 was released, someone on this forum posted side by side infinity comparisons of that lens on the A7r against the RX1. In his tests, the RX1 was clearly better. I don't know how definitive that is though considering we know the FE 35/2.8 itself suffers from so-so quality control/ sample variation (I have seen other tests of that lens which have shown it to be quite good at infinity across the frame).

It's not as stellar wide open or even 2 stops down at infinity but still better than the FE 35/2.8 and FE 28/2 at any aperture. However, starting at f/5.6 all the way to f/11, it's a superb landscape lens.

The FE 28/2 is great in the center but mid/edges are only OK at f/5.6 and above.

So, as far as I can tell, even at infinity, there are no FE offerings that give us better results than the RX1 Zeiss 35/2.

I will post some crops later.

Did that, before F5.6, this lens is sharper than zony f2.8 at corner. My copy of Zony need f5.6 and below to give perfect usable corner on A7r. Center is about the same. After that it is a draw.
The lens is as good as you can get. It is OTUS level without APO.
Some drawbacks:
1. CA(as mentioned above)
2.flare performance (it is not as bad as old lens, but given its small front element I expect better)
3.sunstar, you can't get beautiful sunstar like canikon 16-35 or voigtlander 15 type. I guess that is the price you pay for really round
...Show more

I will quote myself here about its flaw. Distortion is definitely another one I forget to mention.

But infinity sharpness? no!
I look forward to see Fred's results. I will upload a few files if needed once get time around it.

As for most people shoot RX1 WO, no, 90% of shot of RX1 I have is after f5.6 out of most which are around f8~f11, This lens is one of best if not the best. I do have a few test file at infinity WO or some night shot above ISO1600 WO. I don't know what lens you have in the bag, but this one is approaching OTUS level at f2.

The drop-dead gorgeous bokeh on the RX1 is what sets it apart. It really adds a nuclear powered blast to images.

I am guessing it will be even more pronounced with the 42 mpx sensor. Combining a sharp lens like my FE 90 macro with the A7rII = bokeh armageddon!

In everyone of those shots, the tonal separation and color are noticeably better on the RX1r. Pop pop pop.

Fred I wish I had the Tammy in your hands on this test. Im still analyzing this but I'm not thrilled with the 35 FE nor the 28 either. Your 16-35 is a good copy

Hmmmm

Keep in mind the difference in resolution. The FE lenses were shot with my A7R (36MP)
Taken from the same tripod position. Just swiping lenses/cameras.

Infinity focus: It was easy to achieve it on the RX1R. It was the furthest setting to the left on the manual focus ring. For the FE lenses, true infinity is only when you first see the infinity mark when turning to the left). What you see in these crops is the best of 3 but they were pretty much identical.

Settings for both cameras:
RAW
Daylight White Balance
Steadyshot off
Lens corrections off
Remote control for shutter release

*2 stop ND

great comparison fred. i missed it did you apply sharpening?

btw, in my experience f/8 is not the optimal aperture for the rx1 at infinity. there is a noticeable drop in sharpness stopping down from f/4 to f/5.6 over the central half of the image and over the whole image stopping down from f/5.6 to f/8. have you observed this with your copy? obviously, for many landscapes you want to shoot at f/8 or smaller for dof, but if most of the frame is more than 20ft away i generally shoot at f/5.6 or f/4 if there isn't a great deal of detail in the corners.

My RX1R is going back tomorrow and I already miss it.
I should've never tried this camera!!

Here are my findings:

Pros:

* Great price: Can be bought for $1700 new and about $1200-1500 used.

* First and foremost: Tiny full frame camera with one of the best 35mm lens on the market. Built like a tank.

* IQ: Excellent sharpness at macro, close range, mid range (Even WO) and infinity (From f/4 and up). Don't ask me how this is even possible.
At infinity, the optimal setting is f/5.6-f/8 for center to corner sharpness though. (f/5.6 is great for f/8 is slightly better for the extreme corners).
Also excellent at f/11 where there is minimal loss of sharpness/micro-contrast. I would say this is a top landscape lens.

* Unusual high contrast / sharpness with gorgeous smooth bokeh especially at closer distances. The OOF rendering is somewhat lower in contrast and very smooth giving a big pop to your focal point. Yes, call it 3D Zeiss look.
Bold colors and beautiful tonal separation.

* Macro mode: Sharpness is kept high even in macro mode (14cm). Background just melts at this setting.

* Flash sync up to 1/2000s. That is just amazing and makes the little built-in flash very powerful even in sunlight.

* Amazing 24MP sensor with great DR and clean high ISO images.

_________

Cons:

* Not as pocketable as one may expect and weights pretty much the same as my A7R+35/2.8 lens. Camera is front heavy and grip is non-existent. This is compromise for having a high IQ fast lens on a very tiny P&S body.

* Menu system and settings/options not as good as A7 series. Cybershot team should steal the code from the Alpha team.
No RAW crop mode, Peaking only available in magnification mode. No peaking for video.

* No tillable LCD, No built-in EVF, Slow AF especially in low light (Although I was surprised it's very acceptable)

* Unnatural lighting when using fill flash (built-in or external) in Av mode and Auto ISO. Camera fixes shutter speed to 1/80 and lowers ISO 2-3 stops killing ambience light.

________

The new RX1R II fixes most of the shortcoming I experienced with the RX1R and has the potential to give even better IQ. I made up my mind and will be pre-ordering it.

I don't see that at infinity distance. I can post crops showing center/mid/edges at f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6 and f/8 for us to analyze the differences. I would not be shooting at f/2, f/2.8 or f/4 for evenness of the image field.
