These are all very nice photos, but is a tripod or monopod an absolute must?

Absolutely not. I'm willing to bet that most of these images were shot handheld. It's not a light lens, so the threshold of how much can be shot handheld will depend on an individual's strength and physical stamina.

Hm. Size and weight is my main only concern which is why I'm dithering between the 300mm PF and this lens. But price is the other matter too.

I am an older man and find the 200-500mm, D500 with battery holder quite easy to handhold all day long.

But I think it takes practice.

Obviously, by "all day long" I do not mean holding it up constantly. I do mean raising it, and with VR on, taking the time to smoothly release single or continuous shots. Then, lowering it to the side, or in my case, onto my lap (in the canoe), and perhaps raising it again in a few seconds to repeat the process.

If I am excited about what I am shooting I am much less likely to notice the fatigue and when I am raising, holding, shooting, lowering, resting, raising, holding and so on...... I am building muscle strength and it does become easier.

I am accustomed to the 80-400 AFS with same body. Yes, I suppose we should say that the 200-500 rig, when fully extended, is significantly bulkier, much longer and significantly heavier.

But this 200-500 lens still weighs, what...about 4.5 pounds. For its length, that is very lightweight.

You have to try it for yourself.

I rented it for a full month. That was long enough to come to the conclusion that I can handhold this "all day".

I am a 67 yr. old lady and can handhold for several hours without issue. 99% of my shots are handheld. So, tripod or monopod is not an absolute must.

No at all. It just takes a while to get used to handholding and using such a lens in the field, especially if you have never handled longer glass.

Once you use longer primes, everything including the 200-500 feels light weight. As always, it's all relative, I guess .

Manogodungat. Your photograph is beautiful. Was that all natural or did you supplement with additional lights? Would you please elaborate about the setting. I love the patterns in the wingspan and the soft rim light of the left side of the head which could be produced by the light off the wing. That and the owl shot has got me sold on this lens.

Thanks.
No additional lights, but some late evening light from behind/left side of the bird. That is one area where D810 sensor shines !

Not sure if this is best posted here or in the D500 thread...
Anyway, this was shot under the worst of conditions... low light and low contrast.
Camera: D500 ISO1600, 1/50, f/5.6, @ 500mm on 3-series tripod w/ VR on.

The combo of the D500 and 200-500VR continues to impress me!

Very nice! I agree, I think the D500 and 200-500 were made for each other.
