I noticed the hook straight away.

I made a photo of my mounted red fox with an outdoor scene painting behind, entered it in a contest. .

Need your opinion...So this lens was just reduced by $200 to $1200 new. Mint used ones were selling right around the $1000 mark before the sale. Do you expect the used market to drop, or was the $1000 already anticipating a sale price? The reason I ask is that I am about to pull the trigger on a used one, and now wondering if I might be overpaying a bit. Thanks.

^^^^Good question, I would also be interested if anyone has an opinion. I looked at a new one today at my local camera shop. The current rebate combined with Nikon's warranty makes it a tough call.
Thanks

Just wanted to make sure everyone saw the sale price, and wondering if paying $1k is now too much or is still ok for a mint usa lens.

I would probably go for a new one personally for that price. I doubt the used price will go down much lower than it is already.

Excellent shots, Whayne.

However, unless these shots were taking in WA, I think you'll find that is a Variegated Wren, not a Red WInged Fairy Wren.

With the potential sample variation between copies of this lens, you would be hard pressed to return it if you buy used from a private party.

It does appear that you do indeed have a nice sharp copy. Very nice Mike. How close? My experience is that this lens is very very sharp out to 30-40 yards but falls apart a bit at longer distances.

Yes, the lens is very very sharp at shorter distances (minimal focus distance until approximately 40/50 yards).
I would not say, it falls apart at the long end in general, but it seems inconsistent at the long ends (light? humidity?) Sometimes I get excellent results also at the long end and then they are not pin sharp. But the versatility of this lens is stunning, you can even get macro shots with it!

The eagles above are not cropped from about 20 feet.

A few more examples below:
1. Oyster Catcher from about 40 yards. D500, 200-500, 500mm (750mm), f5.6, 1/3200, ISO 400
2. Red Kite from about 120 yards. D500, 200-500, 500mm (750mm), f5.6, 1/4000, ISO 800
3. Hornet from the minimal focus distance. D500, 200-500, 500mm (750mm), f5.6, 1/400, ISO 1000

The variety and colours of the various members of the "parrot" family in Australia is staggering... here's an Eastern Rosella from about 30 meters, so quite heavily cropped...

Well, as you said, you seem to have a very sharp copy. But, take a look back through the thread a few pages and you'll see a lot of un-sharp photos. Most of these are at longish distances. Now sure, that could be from any number of things. Also, I wonder if folks are leaving VR on at high shutter speeds because that definitely causes some softness, at least on my copy.

Once again, nice shots.

Hi Jim

Thx a lot for your kind words. I hear you and I also see quite some blurry results, but I can not justify why. That can result from different things: lens softness, handling, aperture, shutter speed, etc..
One thing regarding the VR causing softness: I hear that everywhere and probably it is, but I NEVER disable VR on my lens regardless the shutter speed. I even have VR on when using the lens on a gimbal on the tripod.

Below some examples with high shutter speed and VR on:

1. Eagle, D500, 200-500/f6.6, 320mm (480 equiv.), f5.6, 1/3200, ISO 2000, manual
2. Harris' Hawk, D500, 200-500/f6.6, 500mm (750 equiv.), f5.6, 1/3200, ISO 2000, manual
3. Snow Owl, D500, 200-500/f6.6, 340mm (510 equiv.), f5.6, 1/4200, ISO 1200, manual
