Love the clarity of these Kirk. The D500 & 200-500 looks like a great combo.

Shooting and posting the 200-500. Trying very hard to avoid anything to do with 500PF.

Same red-tailed hawk as previous.

I had my maiden voyage with the 200-500 today. My initial impressions are very positive. I expect my lenses to be useable wide open if needed and the lens seems to deliver throughout the focal range, which is great. Build quality is pretty good for the price and the weight comes with the territory and wasn't too bad.

Hi,

As the owner of a Coolpix P900 and having recently purchased a D7500, this thread has me thinking. The bird shots (and others) look so good with the 200-500mm that it makes me wonder if I should sell the P900 and put the proceeds towards the purchase of the Nikon 200-500mm. I could buy the 200-500mm and not sell the P900, but aside from convenience, from what I have seen here I should be using my D7500 and a 200-500mm for my bird shooting.

Does this make sense? I thought keeping the P900 would be a bit redundant if I had the 200-500mm.

Any thoughts or suggestions would sure be welcome.

Thanks, Tom

Definitely do whatever you need to do and get the 200-500. No brainer. One of the best bangs for the buck.

I believe that your best option is going with the 200-500 since you already have a camera. As long as you’re willing to carry the extra weight. Photography is all about compromises and I believe that a quality telephoto lens paired with an APS-C body is the best way to get into bird photography. Nothing is more frustrating (to me) then putting in a lot of effort and ending up with mediocre results. If I make a mistake I can deal with it and learn from it, but I find it very frustrating when my gear holds me back. Here’s my personal list of priorities in order of preference. In my case the D500 and 200-500 meet my needs best.

1. Image quality
2. Reliable focus
3. Sufficient focal length for subject
4. Fits in my budget.

Thanks for your opinions...looks like a have some thinking to do. I do a lot of bird photography and the P900 if used correctly has been okay. However, when I see the detailed results from the 200-500mm it just keeps calling my name.

thanks. I’m from Missouri and there is definitely a difference in the numbered of bird species here. It’s a nice perk for sure!

The lighting here looks interesting, what time of day was this? Almost looks like a flash was used.
