Who made those claims??
Different forum... check out naturescapes, as there is a lot of bias against the 200-500VR, even when some have decided to sell their fixed 500mm VRG (version 1) after shooting both lenses side by side.
Having owned the 200-500VR for about two years now and shooting it alongside my more expensive 200-400VR, I can honestly say that there is very little optical difference between the final output of these two lenses.
Were it not for the demands of Minnesota's weather and the need to shoot at f/4 from time to time, I would have sold the 200-400 lens. As it stands, my wife uses the 200-500 as her primary telephoto and I continue to shoot with the 2 to 4.
D7200 + Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E AF-S VR (on) @ 400mm + BushHawk stock mount, ISO 220, f/5.6 at 1/640s; 50% crop (12/24Mp). Almost no sharpening, just amount 22, radius 0.2 after downsizing to internet. Every day this lens amazes me how sharp it is even wide open!

Mine's spot on as well, with no adjustment needed. Here's some shots that I just found while revisiting old image dumps, of a grazing Nyala, a rather agitated Rhino, a Cape Buffalo, and some well-fed Hyenas at Kruger, South Africa, all shot with it and the D800E.

So I'm enjoying the fruits of all y'alls' labor, viewing these photos
I've been looking at this and the Sigma 150-600 (C or S) for a while -- Wondering if anyone here considered that lens (or used it) and why they decided on the Nikon?
My first hunch is that comfort with shooting first-party is pretty good...but I read the 200-500 is a bit slower AF than the Sigma (for things like BIF).
Hard to find a head-to-head with regards to AF-C on these. I swear I'm going to start a kickstarter and build an AF-C facility.

Like cputeq, I've been enjoying looking through the fabulous images on this thread. I know that there is huge skill involved with getting images of this quality but I am wondering about adding the 200-500 to my lenses so that I can start working towards that skill. So, I have a question:
200mm is quite long, especially on an APS-C camera like a D7200 or D500. If you want the capacity to shoot closer subjects (e.g. if you were on a safari and animals were coming right up to your jeep), how would you 'pair-up' a lens to cover the 50-200mm range? I am assuming that you would be using a second camera with the other lens. Interested in what combinations people use in the field.
I should have mentioned, I currently have a D7200 and D90 with a 16-80mm and 70-200 f/4 lens. I have an older 18-140mm lens. Other than the first two lens, I'm considering the possibility of replacing the D90.
