Insanely high ISO (12800) Tassie Devil with the D750...
This was one of a pair of juvenile Tassie Devils racing around their habitat non-stop in dim light, requiring a wide open aperture and a fast shutter speed to stop motion. I didn't hold much hope for the results, but the D750 200-500VR combo came through yet again..

From my brief experiment with the 200-500VR my impression is that at close distances both the 200-500VR and 80-400G are on par below 350mm, but the 80-400G starts to lose to the 200-500VR towards 400mm. At distance there's no contest: 200-500VR all the way.

Now that this lens has been out for a while, what's the generally-accepted comparison of its image quality versus the 80-400G?
Please note that the question is only meant to refer to absolute image quality, not to price or value.
It's better than the 80-400G at all overlapping focal lengths. They really are quite different lenses though, but since you're strictly talking about absolute image quality, the 200-500 is the winner in this case. I don't think I've ever seen any reputable testing suggesting otherwise, and it matches my own experience. It is also the conclusion of Lensrentals, who has the luxury of testing minimum 10 copies of each lens. Even Nikon's own theoretical MTF charts on each lens show the 200-500 performing better.

I have both lenses, and have used both extensively.
The 200-500 is superior. Once I got used to the increased bulk, and because of the 200-500's outstanding image quality thoughout the focal lengths.....I have not picked up the 80-400 AFS for months now.
As has been noted by others here and elsewhere, it is sharper at close distances. And at those distances it can be super sharp with perfect technique. But even at long distance, my 200-500 is very acceptably sharp....and yes, sharper than the 80-400 AFS.

Just finished setting up from behind the tripod when this guy flew into my field of view.
Don't know how they behave where you live, but at my place in Maine, Northern Cardinals are terribly shy....very quick to leave the scene at any indication of me looking out.
Knowing he would quickly make his way to the ground to feed, I decided to tommy gun him (CL). To my surprise he was curious to the sound. I suspect he was carefree because it is a gorgeous spring day and the hormones are flowing now.
This image is exactly as it was taken from the D500; i.e. zero post processing. I like it that way.

ISO 200, wide open at 1/500s. 75% cropped (7.5/10Mp). < 4m of distance. Efectively a 1350mm equivalent to FX format.

I'll have to try that 3D tracking on wide. I am sorry..... I am assuming you captured these very high-quality wildlife documentary images with the D500 ? On my D500 I have not even given 3D a thought. Here, it seems to have done well on #4 with those cliffs so close.
