This lens is really a sharp lens. It's hard to fully appreciate it when we have to resize the image for forum use.

Agreed.. I'd put it at the FE55 level.. not sure it's as sharp as the 90 macro, but it's got to be close.

Beautiful shots, thanks for sharing! I've pre-ordered the Batis 85 and it's nice to see more examples of its rendering in different situations.

Of course, if I really want swirly I can get out my Helios 85/1.5

btw, minolta200, love your screen name--I still have a Minolta AF 200/2.8 which I use on my A7. I used to have the HS version, and the Minolta 200/4 APO macro and they're all among my favourites of all time.

To my eyes, the bokeh detracts from the subject rather than setting her off, I guess I am not a fan of swirly bokeh.

What's the difference in size/weight between the two?

There's a good pic of the Batis 85 and FE 90 with the FE 55 thrown in for scale:

Batis is 475g, FE 90 is 602g.

Thank you! I'm happy to share with everyone. The Helios will give you some serious swirl!

The Minolta 200mm F2.8 APO was my favorite lens back in college. Unfortunately, I sold it along with all my other Minolta gear. I still miss it very much. I really should have kept it. One of these days, I will have to get another copy!

The swirly bokeh doesn't show up in all pictures. As you can see in my second image, it disappeared at F1.8 and in this particular background.

I've noticed the same thing, sometimes you get the swirly, sometimes the background just melts away into creamy goodness. Love what I've seen from this lens so far.

Very nice comparisons. Well, that makes the Batis 85 more desirable. It has less swirl than either FE 90 or 55 in those comparisons. Also, in that comparison, the Batis 85's bokeh was much nicer. Now, I'll just have to wait for a comparison between the Sony FE 85/1.4 and the Batis 85. I suspect the contrast and colors in that lens won't be as good as the Batis, given lack of T*.

"T" coating is touted for micro contrast...the Sony G lenses tend to have a warmer color which many people seem to prefer over the cooler Zeiss.
