Love the comp!

That dreamy look is the orton effect? If yes can you give some details of what were the settings used? I see that dreamy look from time to time esp in the sky but I don't know how to add it to my pics If you decide not to answer my question that is ok too.

Very nice...
I like the way the light is spilling into the whole
scene from the right showing all the great textures!

First of all thank you everyone!

I appreciate all the compliments and feedback. Sorry for the delayed responses and not being able to get to them all right now. I have literally driven about 4000 miles this week (1050 just today!) and try not to be on my laptop when driving!

Very nice mark.

One thing that bothers be is the darkness of the reflected moon. From experience, I know it should be brighter. It isn't natural, it's just flat.

Thank you fro the compliment and feedback.

Mark - this is very nice. Great colors and composition. Although for my taste I would shoot higher and skip the reflected moon because the bottom is a bit dark without features.

Great job. Scott

Thank you Scott. Appreciate the feedback.

Really nice glow going on here and I like how the moon in the left helps visually balance the more intense colors on the right. When did you take this? I'm finally going to be back in the area later this summer and hope there's still some water around.

I think this was last Aug. But I led tours there in Aug, Sept and Oct last year, so right now I can not remember which time it was. I do remember I was right next to a client. I actually set them up with the shot and then shot right next to them.

Thank you. I too like the reflection. You don't get water here very often. Always a plus in the desert.

Wonderful image, Mark. Great stuff. We can only hope the monsoon kicks into gear soon. It's been a little off in AZ this year but a little better here in NM.

I have been told they have been better than usual. Is that not true? I'll be down very soon! See you down there!

I think it is a very nice looking image. It's interesting that (to me at least) the clouds that are under the moon look sharper in the reflection than in the actual sky.

That is weird. Must be the auto masking in the Camera Raw sharpening filter I used for the web.

Nice image Mark and well captured.

The moon in the reflection doesn't look at all natural though.

I recently decided to curtail my Workshops to White Pocket which I had been running since 2005 because the location has just become so over run with photographers and general tourists that the place just lost the special feel of 'wilderness' about it.

I used to take my groups out there and spend a couple of nights camping to make the most of the sunset and sunrise light that one really needs for great photographic opportunities and we had many of those!

But now it's just really 'Disney in the Desert' and visited by so many people each day. The last time I was there a photo workshop turned up in SIX SUV's and deposited around 30 so called photographers for an afternoon shoot!

Nothing is sacred anymore and I am so GLAD that I made my living as a landscape photographer and built up my print collection for clients well before the birth of digital photography and manipulation.

I'm still selling open edition prints that I originally captured back in 1988 and through the years on 4x5 and 8x10 film to collectors and the public today but noted somewhere on your media websites that you have stopped selling prints. Surely the prints sales of your fine work should be utmost?

I guess the only way to make a living as a Landscape Photographer nowadays is to run workshops.

The colour transition is just beautiful. The moon is fighting for attention with the sky on the opposite side but it is not a big deal. Great shot anyway.

Thank you for the comment Nigel and your perspective.

Yes, as you say, all these places we go are always growing and population rising and more people taking photos. In some ways it is unfortunate (finding remote special locations is harder, or the areas get abuse for example) but I think it is also really cool more people are getting to experience what we have had the greatest privilege of doing liberally. I still absolutely LOVE White Pocket and LOVE having the great privilege of sharing it with other photo enthusiasts. I don't see that waning for quite some time. In fact I will be living near by in a couple weeks and will be able to go out anytime I want, at a drop of a hat, and am literally itching with anticipation! I think I have spent maybe 40-60 total days out here over the years, but still feel I have not even begun to capture its diverse and dazzling beauty. I agree that more and more are coming out there, and at some point in the near future they will have to put in a permit system to protect it. I'm fine with that. It is very unique and special and is becoming in need of protection. Last time I was out there I noticed people had scratched graffiti (their names) in sandstone near by. That really makes me mad!

Glad you have had a great career. Congrats!

No, no where on my website does it say I am not making fine art prints any more. After attempting to pull off a gallery on the LV "strip" during the beginning of the economic downfall, then going bankrupt as a result, and then having a weak economy for a while where fine art took a huge hit, I just naturally shifted toward educational services (workshops, post processing video tutorials, teaching via online Skype and doing post processing for fine art gallery clients). I have always loved teaching, I also love leading etc, so it is all good. I am very happy to do so. But having said that, yes I still sell my fine art prints. In fact next year I have some plans to expand that. As I am sure you know, it is not easy to try to do everything all at the same time. One methodical step at a time...

As far as workshops being "the only way to make a living these days." I don't see it that way. As just one small example, one of my post processing gallery clients (I do his post processing for galleries) came to me for my post processing services, I encouraged him that he could make a living in gallery work, and he has had another full time job so is very limited in how much time he has or can put into this, made $20,000-$30,000 last year on the side! This is only one small gallery that he does not own. Maybe quite a unique situation, but I know (and do processing for) others as well. I do agree it is not easy! But at least at this point in my journey I do not think impossible. But yes, who knows, maybe next year I will change my mind...

Best to you.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Yes I misunderstood your remark about making Fine Art Prints. Of course there is a big difference between making Fine Art Prints and actually selling them. But you did post on Facebook that.. and I quote your own post...

"16. No, I do not sell a ton of fine art prints right now. That is not my focus (although that will change in the future with some new gallery plans). I lead Photo Tours/Workshops in between my own personal shooting. I also sell Instructional Video Tutorials." end quote.

If you didn't run workshops and the lessons on Skype... you wouldn't be able to make a living as a Landscape Photographer.. isn't that a fair comment?

The best advertising that a Landscape Photographer can make is not to market one's work to other Landscape Photographers because they aren't your real clients, unless of course you want to market workshops.

I personally would just wish that you would stop using this forum to try and sell your workshops and Skype lessons and over hype your own self importance. I think everyone knows that you run workshops etc, and lets be honest Mark, you wouldn't post here on FM if it weren't for that reason.

It's about time that the MOD's here stood up and stopped this self promotion stuff but I very much doubt that given their record this year.

It's nothing real personal Mark... it's just that I'm so fed up of all the BS that seems to come with photography these days.

Cheers,
Nigel.

This might be a fine opportunity to offer up a bit of a reality check for some readers. (And, yes, I realize that quite few of you already know this.)

One of the common misconceptions among many folks who aspire to landscape photography has to do with their notions about the actual lives of "professional landscape photographers." The perception seems to be that such people focus all or most of their attention on making photographs, a very romantic and attractive idea. (And there is something very special and romantic and life-changing about living all or a good part of your life in the creative world.)

It turns out that people matching the myth are extraordinarily rare. I know several who do more or less make decent livings as landscape photographers — but even they must do other things in order to realize a decent living: write books (though that isn't quite the money-maker most imagine either), offer workshops (potentially the biggest money-maker of the bunch, if you are up for it), lead tours (also potentially quite profitable, though it can turn one into more of a tour guide than a photographer), teach photography at an educational institution.

Then there are quite a few who have long careers doing other things, and their primary, reliable income comes from those sources, sources that free them up to pursue photography — actually making photographs — as their primary or only focus. There is also another interesting group from which I have a few acquaintances — people who had very successful careers, sometimes extremely successful, in the tech world or similar and who made the right investments and are now essentially able to self-sustain on the basis of their investment income.

Another very common situation is for the photographer to have a spouse who is reliably employed — one spouse works a "regular job" while the other pursues the artistic life... though it, too, is often replete with the workshops, writing, tour guiding, and other stuff.

As a photographer, it is always a question just how much to tell people about how this works. People often make assumptions about my circumstances that are not quite accurate — do I sustain the myth for branding/marketing purposes? do I demur to avoid punching a hole in their dream? do I tell them the full (boring) story? do I run with it and romanticize?

And, in the end, from what I've seen there is not precise a one-to-one connection between folks who call themselves professional landscape photographers and the quality of the work. In general, the more engaged one is in the business of photography, the more one understands about photographs and how they work, but there are some "professionals" whose work doesn't match that of some "amateurs" — using the latter word in the context of its original meaning... a person who invests himself or herself fully in an endeavor for "love."

Take care,

Dan
