Got my 5DS this evening, but unfortunately it was dark by the time I got everything setup on the camera. I'll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to test it...😖
One positive so far...I appreciate the quieter shutter sound compared to the 5D Mark III. Shooting wildlife, I was always bothered by the shutter sound produced by the 5D3 on high speed photos settings.
Also, in my opinion, the camera writing speeds are quite manageable. I was expecting worse...
I crawled out of bed just before sunrise to catch some morning light. Taken at the rose fields near my house. The heat has been brutal the past week or so... finding a rose which didn't have heat damaged petals was a challenge.
So.. tried something new to me (don't laugh) .. live view. Who knew it was so useful? ROFL! All the images were taken with the Zeiss 135mm T* F/2. Live view... the tripod.. and cable release were my friends this morning. Love this lens/camera combo!!!
If you would like to see the full res files... just let me know and I'll upload them to Dropbox.
Fun morning out... just trying to get adjusted to the new lens and camera. I think tomorrows adventures will be butterflies.
You should shoot everything you can using live view with this camera.
You get mirror lockup and 1st curtain electronic shutter when you do.
Prove it to yourself. Take a shot normally as you would, then using live view with 2 second timer.
Then pixel peep.

It was very helpful to say the least. The DOF @f/2.0 is very narrow as you know.. and using LV to focus made it a breeze. Not to mention I could see lens shake when I was focusing and I could wait until the camera settled down to take the shot.
I'm not sure if I would use LV while photographing a person... but.. I'll give it a shot. I move around a lot when I shoot and the tripod/LV scenario might be a challenge. But... I'm willing to retrain myself to make sure I hit focus and get sharp shots.

Why? Is the AF not up to par? The pixel pitch is the same or larger than the 7D II and Rebels that I'd never use in LV. If the 5Ds is only good for statues then the Sony A7r II would be a better choice with a far superior sensor.

I think rather the case is that if you don't take care to maximize your shooting technique you won't see much of an advantage in the extra resolution.

For this case... the AF would be not be up to par..as the Zeiss doesn't have it. j/k I've shot a few hundred images with it hand-held... no issues... the AF on my lenses are doing just fine. I do think for the sharpest shots.. a tripod/monopod is the way to go if the shoot and your shooting style allows for it.

I'm hoping to use the 5DsR with the 500/4 IS and also the 200-400/4 w/1.4x TC in decently bright light. The 1DX will need to be used in lower light.
KK - I was playing with shooting city pans of Las Vegas. First attempt at a stitched vista with my 300 / 2.8 was off; I think I might have to retry after seeing your shot!
I am off to try some astro near Zion tonight. Could be interesting. At least it might be cooler than Vegas so long as we can get around the EDC traffic. Report later tomorrow

Thanks Karl! In the full size image you can see the foggy around the city so this shot is not good for pixel peeping
The next thing I wanna try is stitching too, But not a panorama, is a 3 rows 12 portrait shots together with use of 100L, should be much easier than you using 300/2.8, I think you are going to challenge your computer too

Pending your astro shots
Computer is good... Sandy Bridge-E I7 with ASRock Extreme 11, 32 GB, FirePro W5000 and NEC PA's - fast and 10-bit/channel color. This old computer game developer always overbuys (we were always targeting machines two years forward) Looking at getting a dedicated SSD for the LR Catalog
Yeah, despite leveling, I was off a few percent. Never be perfect.. but even autostitch got confused on a seven shot pan (it was not only the 300/2.8, but with the Tele 2X - shooting from seven miles away elevated from the west). I also have a hilltop near Boulder City zip line that gives me views.
Yep. I was referring to static shots on tripod...guess I could have been more clear...
