Thanks a lot Carolyn. The holes are created by parasites like lice, mites and blowflies.The martins line their nest bowls with fresh green leaves that, as they decay, release hydrocyanic acid (cyanide gas), a fumigant somewhat toxic to their nest-dwelling parasites.
