Perhaps the sacking of the CEO wasn't such a bad idea after all. Too many missed opportunities for Leica in the T while it should have been this all along.
Given product development timelines, I would have thought the Q was green lighted under the previous CEO's supervision.
Leica Q, don't know if it was in macro mode or not. I suspect it was. It's so easy to switch back and forth, I forget.. That and the camera can get close without switching to macro mode. Nothing special, I like the rendering, was at the flower shop today with my stylist.
I have had the Leica Q since Monday - a few observations
- the sensor is fantastic, great latitude, very low noise at base ISO compared to the Leica 240, fantastic colour and easy to post process, very easy to convert to B&W, can't wait for it to be used in future Leica cameras
- the lens is very sharp and the issue with corners is exaggerated. Fantastic performance closeup and at infinity even wide open. Distortion can be an issue though particularly for architecture even after the automatic distortion corrections have been applied in the DNG file. I am not sure if Lightroom will eventually have a dedicated profile but I have found that any residual distortion can be corrected if you apply the Leica Elmarit ASPH profile and dial down distortion correction to 80%. I compared infinity performance against my Leica M240 with an Elmarit 28/2.8 ASPH with both lenses set to f5.6 and performance is identical. The Leica M240 seems to have a tiny bit more micro-contrast however it does result in false colour which the Leica Q is handling a lot better (this is not moire)
ergonomics - the camera is perfect for street shooting either using manual or autofocus - the viefinder and LCD are bright and clear, it does need the grip though which is wonderful if used with a wrist strap
Went out to support a friend's store opening party. Decided to bring the Q, and try the crop mode as much as possible. Natural light, between f/1.7 and f/5.6 a bit wonky with the strobing pinks, purples and blues, but kinda cool. (Admittedly I'm not a great friend. I was only there about 15-20 minutes before I got hungry and ran off to eat German style Pork Knuckle.):
When you have a chance please shoot some long landscapes with distant details, edges and corners
Hello uhoh thanks for your comments - did an infinity shot at f5.6 from my roof terrace - this is at full resolution no other geometric corrections are applied
Adam - fun shots! Looks like the Q handles strong specular backlights pretty well, based on that one with the LED lights shining right at the camera, top right of frame #6.
In case anyone is interested, last week Sandy at Chromasoft posted a brief technical overview of the Q's DNG files.
1 - For those asking about US availability. I asked around at a couple of stores today they all said "early July".
2 - As many in this thread have been pointing out, there seems to be a lot of Panasonic DNA in this camera. The viewfinder uses Panasonic tech, the O.I.S. smells like Panasonic to me right down the rattling lens when its off, the dealer I spoke with told me the Leica Q uses a Panasonic battery.
So my question is ... what are the odds that in six months we see a Panasonic branded version of this camera at half the price?

This is speculation of course, but I would say very unlikely due to the camera being "made in Germany" and the typical Leica body styling. It's not impossible to see a similarly specked camera but with different styling from Panasonic though.
Did you MF the lens? I think I will make some new 28 cron shots on the A7.mod so I can guard against being over critical. These sorts of shots are telling, I think, but many variables, so the more you see at various apertures, the better.
Please in your travels, shoot some of these at various apertures
Also would be interesting to compare AF infinity with MF infinity.
Everyone: who makes the sensor?
not CMOSIS say Leica guard dogs at L forum.
So here's my guess: who do we know that has high confidence in on-camera image correction? Who could scale a new spec rapidly? Who is desperate to widen FF sensor market? Who might cut Leica a great deal?
