Don't you worry, I would thoroughly test this cam with my M-mount line-up, from 15 to 50.

I somewhat agree with you Matt. Except I'm on the Canon side of the house so I don't have access to great Sony sensors. Sure, I could move to Nikon, but there are some canon lenses I just cant get there. (i.e. 17 TSE).

Anyway, my hope is somehow the metabones EF AF can be faster with this body. I'll keep a couple sony mount lenses around.

Yes, I get that aspect of things, for a Canon user.

However, considering that DR is Canon's only "drawback", and considering how incredible Lightroom's new HDR DNG creation feature is, I'm thinking that any serious landscape photographer should feel no shame in getting a 5DsR, and any serious astro-landscape photographer should feel quite proud to have a pair of 6D's...

In short, it makes a good add-on to an existing Nikon / Canon lens arsenal, but as its own system, it is a tough cookie to swallow, especially for me.

Well we all know that the Cv 15mm will probably work well the 3rd version at least lol

Anyhow, no love for RX10 II? That baby is really getting my attention now. I am always more attracted to fixed lens systems. Maybe RX10 to accompany the RX1?

Hard to get excited about RX10II at $1300 when there is Panasonic FZ1000 at $800.

Aweosme. Never really liked using the LE-EA4 as it did not use camera's AF system.

No. LA-EA3 is full frame. LA-EA2 and LA-EA1 are APS-C with and without SLT mirror respectively. Similarly LA-EA4 and LA-EA3 are full frame again with and without SLT mirror respectively.

It's the same body design as the a7 II... i'm guessing you don't want to get it wet.

Mine is the trickier ZM 15 . If this lens passes with flying colors, it would be a good news for all (maybe not the ZM 18 or 21/4.5).

I disagree.

The battery argument has some truth but one can easily carry an extra battery on hand in their pocket, they are tiny. Between this and a second battery one can get 500 shots easily (and I'm underestimating that).

Additionally if one wants a larger grip and longer battery you can optionally add that grip taking you up to a compact DSLR size.

With DSLR there is no option to size down. It's always big (or really big with the grip). Even though the weight might be close now - only a few ounces the bulkiness is quite different. Sony packs a lot into one of their bodies. I can easily carry the A7II with a small prime attached to a Black Widow Spider Holster and take it anywhere literally.

You also have the advantage of EVF, what you see is what you get. I think this is a great release and I think that it finally gives Sony a reason to slow down their body development and work on their lens line.

For the casual or travel shooter the Sony lineup is quite exciting. The fact that there are nearly 1000 pages of images on the Alt Forum of the Sony A7 series is a testament to that.

A D750 is 26 oz. (And megapixels don't weigh anything, of course.)

A Sony NP-FW50 battery stinks so much, you have to carry 3-4 for every one Nikon EN-EL15.

Clearly, as Sony attempts to step up the build quality of their camera bodies, they're rapidly losing the biggest advantage that has always been at the top of *MY* list of reasons to show any interest: weight savings.

As an adventure / landscape photographer, my priorities have always been (in no particular order) ruggedness,

This is very significant!! I have never been interested in LA-EA2 / LA-EA4 and have been hoping Sony would enable PDAF with LA-EA1/LA-EA3.

Or we can have a LA-EA5 with built-in motor. Finally, a true unified Alpha camera.

85% of a 5Ds in pixel count. Better in terms of DR (barring an odd setback in that department), better in terms of having IBIS, probably not as good with AF.

Have you looked at the system as a whole? With lenses on, the Sony system certainly have clear advantage in term of weight and size. Not that you choose to ignore the fact the D750 MP is no where closed to the 42MP, no IBIS, no BSI, etc. (too many to list really). If weight is your priority, last gen A7 series still can hang with D750 in term of IQ. This next gen Sony is clearly ahead of the D750. For landscape, I would take the full-time LV over the clunky mirror-flip LV of the D750.

dpreview is reporting that the new PDAF will work with the Canon metabones adapter (link):

"Agreed. PDAF works with Canon lenses via Metabones adapter, and A-mount lenses via the LA-E3. We're checking to see if you actually get the full AF coverage with subject tracking, but for now, consider our minds blown. "

That about sums it up for me (almost)

We don't know anything about long exposure hot pixels yet, but if the Canon as it seems can do very long exposures without NR, that is more productive to me than the difference in DR, given that the 5DS R has pleasing shadow noise characteristics, not the ugly banding from the 5D II.

Also, resolution is the IQ aspect that I want most to step up a little right now.

So even though the A7r is an important upgrade from an A7 in many aspects, I will stick to my plan and get a 5DS R right now mostly for AF in some use cases and resolution in others, and upgrade my A7r later down the road.

smaller and lighter (with batt. life penalty), full time LV (vs. clunky mirror-up LV) and associated benefits, BSI sensor possibility of fast AF with Canon EF lenses with T/S option down to 11mm. And if there is the A9 coming... Sony is becoming a true universal digital back with close to native platform performance.

The faster AF with Canon lenses is highly doubtful via the Metabones adapter.
The weight advantage if you add the Metabones adapter and a needed battery is reduced to a mere 100g, almost gone.
