p.14 #1 · Announced: Sony A7R II

'Enjoyment' with a large unwieldy body, no EVF, poor manual focusing and generally heavy OEM lenses propped up by off brand cheapies for the mount; versus superior image quality from SOA lenses in a light small body. Menu preferences versus image quality. Invisible purity in RAW versus image quality. And IBIS. Silent shutter. No AF micro adjustment. The latest sensor tech. Video. 42Mp = 8% more resolution. AF with off brand lenses. Your choice of any lens.

A matter of priorities, a tough choice for some, for others, not so much ;-) Enjoy the buttons, menus and sanctified RAWs and illusory weight equality, they are demonstrably coming at the expense of image quality, functionality and versatility. Nikon is resembling a rerun of the Monty Python knight..'It's just a flesh wound!'

Get the a7 II. The price for a used one should start dropping soon. The price is right, 24MP is plenty, and you also get IBIS!

True! Will keep my eyes open on the used market!

I just re-purchased a slow and clunky a7r Despite its limitations and quirks, it is an excellent landscape camera. I really like the sensor with good glass. I've spent the last year assembling some great glass just for it. A BSI sensor will be nice, but it does more on paper than in practice. I have the non-BSI samsung nx30 and BSI nx500. They both have great sensors, but not as much difference as might be expected. The new Sony is even less of a leap in MP as a percent.

Most importany, lenses perform differently on the two sensors.

I've got nothing useful to say. I'm just going to vent the way I criticise other for.
WOW!!
All the things that, separately, I thought were unlikely have come true.
I was desperately hoping for IBIS and EFCS and not sure we would get both, with maybe at best the D810 sensor.
But we got all that plus a BSI sensor (maybe up to a stop of genuine sensor level improvement??!!), 8% more resolution, SILENT SHUTTER as well as EFCS. Whoah!
Some say that the BSI sensor might perform a little better in the corners (that would explain the testers who thought that it might have had a curve in it)
But even if not. WOW!!

AND Dave Etchells at Imaging Resource says, based on his talk with senior people in the A& team, that uncompressed RAW is likely to come with a firmware update. But even if not
WOW!
I haven't been so excited by a new toy for... I don't know. Maybe when the OM4 was first announced?

Sony's marketing dept. are not being completely honest about this camera. The karting image supplied to illustrate 5fps burst mode - I'd put money on it being shot on either a 1DX or from 4K frame grabs.

I think this camera could become a classic if it had 8fps - 5fps seems measly to me given the AF hype.

With the few quick reviews noting that A7RII is making possible for fast AF with 3rd parties lenses through adapters.

Maybe the time has really come... a single camera to rule them all. Imagine someone coming up with AF adapter for Nikon F-Sony FE...

Not saying you are wrong but do you have proof? I mean, we could just as likely say it IS from the camera at 5 fps. If you don't know... well you just don't know. It could just as well be shot on a Nikon D4. Or a Nikon F5 then scanned if we're just gonna go and guess anyway. Or from 5 different pre-focused Olympus Om-1's and then scanned. We can go on with silly guesses all night and day really.

Not to mention the fact that that MOST people don't shoot that fast sport nor do they need 8 fps. Or to mention the fact that you would need an even faster cpu, more buffer, faster memory etc in order to handle the extra 3 fps.

I'm not a Sony fanboy, I don't even have a Sony (yet) but making statements like this is just plain silly...

After a lot of thought, this camera is pretty much more than i could have hoped for. PDAF support for canon lenses is just beyond amazing to me. The only thing I can really think to complain about is the price. I do wish it had weather sealing closer to the D810/5D3. Of course, that is out the window by using an unweather sealed adapter anyway.

I don't, but to my eyes - which could be wrong - that kart sequence doesn't look like 5fps.

It is potentially a great camera, and highly desirable. Just nice to see disclosure and complete honesty surrounding releases - god knows we live in the greatest consumer era of all time along with its PR and marketing traps and pitfalls.

True, but the same could be said for anything, including video shot with a DSLR on a Nikon or Canon page for example or any other product for that matter. And I agree, it would be nice to really know but since we don't, we'll just have to take their word for it for now. Not sure what makes you think it's not 5 fps in the cart sequence though, it would all depend on the cart speed etc. Impossible to tell from the photos.

I'll admit I am very sensitive to subliminal deceptions and lack of disclosure which surround the hype and fury of a new release.

Like the beautifully shot images in a P&S catalog which suggests the camera in hand is capable of reproducing such work.

Fuji X-T1 - great burst rate, lacking AF, mediocre sensor.

A7r II - great AF, lacking burst rate, great(?) sensor.

A7s II or A7 III (?) - great AF, great burst rate, great(?) sensor.

Implying the A7r II is an action camera - that you can easily shoot motorsports at 5fps... (yes, I know, Jefferson). I am of the opinion that there is a disconnect between the power of the AF on display in Sony's marketing and the burst rate. 4fps was adequate for the first generation and its application - mostly landscapes, but IMHO 5fps is kinda slow for 2015. Yeah, yeah, resolution - throughput.

I am talking garbage I know. Powerful AF + 8fps = nice. Powerful AF and 5fps = meh.

I want it all.

I dont think I've ever seen such a comprehensive update ever before; the a7rii changes are MASSIVE, and props to sony for tackling every single issue that I was concerned with, an then some. Props to them for really dishing out the goods. Sure, a few are disgruntled about the lossy raw, but hey, cant

"Just live with it" is exactly what to say if we don't care at all to pressure Sony into improving a feature / function.

Ironically, the "just live with it" philosophy is also Canon users' downfall when it comes to demanding any sort of DR improvements like, 2-3 generations ago. If folks would calm down about brand pride and be a little less argumentative just for the fun of it, They could have gotten a clear message across by now and seen some real change. Instead, we have Chuck Westfall pre-emptively stating that 5DsR DR is going to be about the same as the 5D III, and many die-hard Canon fans just shrug or make excuses.

So, sure, we could certainly "live with it" just like we could live with a good many things. But why do so, when speaking up could actually create change? What harm could come from adding a menu option for RAW file settings? Would it make the price of the camera go up $5 per camera? $20 per camera?

This is why I feel confused when folks say "can't win 'em all". This, like USB 2 vs USB 3, was a relatively affordable improvement that they absolutely should have made.

I'm never here to bash a camera or a system, I'm only ever hoping to be a voice that joins a chorus that creates better cameras for all, in the long run.

The exact opposite could also be said- if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If tons of people are perfectly happy with the camera they've got, or if this camera introduces as many problems as it solves, the "matter of priorities" is indeed not to be taken lightly, nor does one priority deserve a smirk from another.

Nothing has changed. Sony have been using the ARW 2.3 format for some time. In those cases, it is lossy compressed RAW files.

Naaaa not garbage Paul but like I said before, most people won't care if it's 5 or 8 fps for this camera. Most people won't use it as an action camera. Nikon and Canon holds the throne there and I expect they will for a couple of more years.

I'll be sticking with my A7r for this year, by next year I'll know if I want to upgrade or not to the A7rII.
A minimum shutter speed in auto ISO is a welcomed addition.
I look forward to seeing what custom options are added to this camera.
