I MAY get to use it in game mode this afternoon, but I'm telling you guys it somehow changed the MFA values to less back focus ( all requiring less plus values, in the case of the 70-200II it's negative now).

AFAIK the root cause is unknown, so I how can you know it is a QC issue

Hi all,
I don't know about anyone else, but my 7D mk2 which I picked up on 10/31/2014 has had numerous lockups. Seemed to happen most often (not always) after changing a lens - and yes I do power off before changing the lens. Had to remove the battery for about 20 seconds before recovery possible. I think the firmware was 1.02.
Upgraded to 1.04, have not had the issue yet, but have not shot it that much.

Mine has locked up on me multiple times with Firmware 1.02. To where only the top LCD stayed on, but nothing else worked, and I even turned the power switch OFF, and it stayed on.
I had to remove the battery to turn it off. I didn't switched lenses then or do anything special. I had only turned on the body to check some menu settings.
I may try updating to the new firmware, to see if it improves AI Servo / AF performance in general. I still feel the AF on mine is a bit erratic sometimes. Or not consistent.

My 7D2 with 1.02 also sometimes locks up when I install the 1.4X II. It doesn't like installing the 1.4x by itself to the body then the lens to the 1.4x. If I install the 1.4x to the lens first then attach the combo to the camera, everything is fine. It doesn't matter if you turn the camera off because the lens circuit (and the CF/SD card circuit) is live all the time with the battery installed. The same thing happens with my 5D3 so it's not isolated to the 7D2.
My 5D3 never used to lock up until the most recent firmware. The 7D2 being newer must have the same new firmware feature (I'm guessing is the live circuit regardless of camera off switch position).

I went ahead and installed the firmware just now, and did a settings reset, but didn't do custom settings reset. Tested on the 500 F/4 L IS, and my AF tune value is still valid I think... Going to go out and really test it now.
I want to say, in AI Servo, it's not as twitchy now... which is what I was hoping for. But I'll know more after I get back today.

Just an FYI. Canon's state that you should connect the TCs to the lens 1st and then the body. I'm sure this is probably one of reasons why they state this.

Well, my camera didn't lock up, and isn't worse, but isn't better either. Still not as consistent as I feel it should be. I'll may end up sending it in for the 2nd time.

A couple of weeks ago, I was about to trade my 7D2 for a really clean 1D4 that B&H had for sale. While my 7D2 was capable of very sharp images, the AF was inconsistent - considerably inferior to my 1DX. As soon as it was available, I installed the 1.04 firmware update. I still don’t have total confidence in this camera, but I do think my keeper rate has increased. I use this body almost exclusively with a 400 DO II - which I am totally in love with. Previously in AI Servo, I would nearly always have two or three images from a burst of five that were not tack sharp. Now they are usually all sharp, with the first one perhaps a little soft. I am going to do some more testing, but I think Canon fixed some things they didn’t admit to. For now, I’m keeping my 72D.
This image was hand held using my 400 DO II with a x1.4 III extender. ISO was 800 and no sharpening or noise reduction has been applied.

What AF settings do you usually use for AI Servo?
I had 3 shots in a row today, too far out of focus to use in any case. But maybe there was not enough contrast, I'm not sure. But then again, I had 5 or so shots after that sharp/in focus. Shooting in center point, on a tripod at 1/1000th second +, of a static bird on a cattail, about 20ft away or so.
It seems like the single point AF sensor is quite large, more so than I'd like. Larger than the viewfinder square. The Spot AF is more of a size i'd like.
I was just doing some testing, and in single point AF, if I got even somewhat close to the edge of the center point, it would jump the focus to something else. But Spot AF was much more reliable/predictable imo. But spot AF doesn't always work and isn't recommended for AI Servo.. : \.
I shoot almost exclusively birds, so focus accuracy is very important, and is noticeable when its even a tiny bit off.

Updated the firmware without any problems, needing to re-micro calibrate is not unusual after firmware update.
I was hoping that the version 1.0.4 might fix my inconsistent AF problem, it did not. My 1 month old 7D2 is going back to Canon repair service this morning.

Sounds like you may need to slow down how fast the AF jumps to a competing item. What # do you have it set to?

I've tried all Case Settings/Values. Even all negative values,and I feel it still can be too twitchy sometimes. With my 60D, I could/can shoot a static target in AI Servo, and it wouldn't freak out. But at least half the time on the 7D II, it tries to move around.
I know I shouldn't be using AI Servo on a "static" target, but if a bird moves suddenly or even slightly, it might be too late.
In general, in One Shot and AI Servo, I often experience what others do, and what Jared Polin did. Where it's just not totally sharp, or in focus. It's just that little bit off, which ruins the fine detail of my shots.
I am on my second copy of the 7D II, which I also sent into repair once. But I may just send it in again, and see what they say.
Some of my issues are/were definitely user error, but I know for a fact, other times it's just a total fail, for no apparent reason.
This is what happens quite often. Slightly off , front or back focus.
This is a case where its not AS bad.
