p.1 #1 · Dawn at Laguna Torre

Here are 3 pics of Cerro Torre and Torre glacier from Laguna Torre. I think the different perspectives merits posting 3 of these.

It was a 12.5 mile (RT) hike from El Chaltén (Argentina). Five of us started our hike at 4:00 AM in order to make a sunrise shoot. About halfway into the hike we descended into a lower valley. . . and the temps descended with us - I am guessing it was about 15 degrees fahrenheit!

When we stopped to eat breakfast at a camp area under the trees (a “warmer” area) we could not stay warm. Just before sunrise we hiked the rest of the way to Laguna Torre. Once we topped the crest and in the early predawn light saw the frozen lagoon and the Cerro Torre mountains I forgot all about being cold. Pictures explain!

Hi Dave,

All 3 are very nice but #1 is really super looking, followed slightly by #2.

Thanks for sharing your story, though I don't see how you left without eating breakfast first, I know I couldn't have. My body needs the energy from the food to hike!

Jim

Thanks for all your comments/input.
Jim - every night had late night big dinners so it wasn't too big of a deal and it gave me an additional half hour of and eat a cupcake before hitting the trail. What I really missed that morning was no coffee! Argh!

That is such a cool view, and I'm glad you got nice weather.
Nice shots Dave!
It wasn't frozen over when I was there.

Love the first image ... the composition works really well with the glob of darker ice protruding into the foreground. The colors are nice too with the mix of warm and cool. I might desaturate the blues within the shadows of the mountains just a touch, but otherwise they look fine. There does seem to be a bit of a halo on the upper left rock formation which I would work on smoothing out as well. Perhaps a bit more DOF would have been helpful in the very close foreground, but it totally works just fine as is regardless. What a great experience I'm sure this was!
