Trogdon, I have an excellent copy of the Sony 28/2 that I use with my A7R. Your copy looks a little soft at the edges to me.

I really like the size and weight of the lens, and the performance is pretty good. My Zeiss ZF 25/2.8 is sharper at smaller apertures across the frame, with better micro-detail and colors, but not as good wide open. The Minolta 28/2 makes for a nice all around performing 28mm lens, that works surprisingly well with the 21mm adapter. But, for a strict landscape shot like this I prefer the Zeiss 25/2.8.

Here's a downsized jpeg and full res sample. The full res sample is compressed jpg with some quality loss but should give you an impression of center edge sharpness. It has CA correction, but no distortion or fringing correction. I was trying out Fred's excellent Lightroom preset (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1395603) on these. Sharpness is a little too much for the A7R (it was intended for the A7RII, the original A7R seems to have higher edge accutance), but it can be adjusted.

Hello everybody,

I know this thread is rather old. So, please accept my apologize if my reply to this thread bother you.

I recently bought a Sony A7 mark II because of its compact and lightweight advantage. However, when choosing a lens for using with that body, I'm stuck between Sony FE 35mm f/2.8 (or Samyang 35mm f 2.8 as I heard that this lens good as the Sony one but cheaper) and Sony FE 28mm f/2.8.

I mainly shoot countryside landscape and sometimes portraits of my wife and our children. Could you please kindly give me advices to choose one between these 2 lenses?

There's a very recent thread on this exact topic. There's no concrete consensus, so perhaps read the comments and form your opinion after the input.

Here's a few a dug out of the archives. It was a great value lens that for me got superseded by the 24GM, but for $400 and its tiny size, it's a pretty good.

The 28 f2 is a great travel lens. Nice size and weight that produces great images.

Is this lens known for suboptimal qualify control? I have a copy, but noticeably decentered on the left side till f4. It has pretty decent coma correction though, which it doesn't get enough praise for given the small size and moderate price.

An interesting lens that measures NSG but the pictures are very good. The .75 accessory lens makes for an ungainly assembly but is handy to keep in a pocket and just bayonets on. I have the Batis 25 in the mail but it’s not really a 28mm. The 28mm FL in a prime is scarce. Maybe everyone will now make a 28 soon like the 35mm FL (hint, hint CV 28mm APO).

You could more closely compare the (somewhat bloated) Batis 25 for $1000 To the compact $200 Tamron 24mm F2.8 (both on sale for a while). However, not only must you pay much more for better wide open IQ and a faster lens (with the same or less vignetting) but there’s more size/weight to manage (ultimately the huge/heavy but superb Sigma 28mm F1.4)

Don't you wish Sigma would make a 28mm i-series lens, even at 2.8, that was like their 45i in size and rendering?

Then again, I have my in-between Zeiss ZE 28/2, which is pretty great, although a bit large with MC-11 and heavy (but not as big and heavy as the Sigma). I still keep looking at the Sigma, but as you say, a nice CV APO would really be nice in E mount.

Took the Sony 28 for a spin yesterday, to chronicle some highway memorials.

The FE 28 may be technically inferior to many lenses (including my 28/2 ZE) but I never found it to diminish my photos in any way.

I care far more about overall rendering than edge to edge sharpness and I think this lens renders nicely.

Maybe not the first choice for large hi-rez landscape prints but fine for everything else.

A Q2-equivalent 28 for Sony would be an amazing addition.

Why haven't we seen one
