As I have read through this thread, I fail to see anybody giving the impression that it is as good as the 55mm so no, except for you, one wouldn't think that.
But I can tell you this, the 28mm is a better wide angle then the 55mm.
This lens really interests me, seems like it would be a good replacement for the Sigma 30mm f2.8 that I currently use with the rear baffle removed. The Sigma is quite decent for close up work, but for longer things the darkened corners are distracting and I don't like cropping in
Can anyone with an a7r or a7rii post more landscape full sized samples? I just bought one of these on eBay and it doesn't seem all that sharp to me at landscape differences. I can't tell if this is normal or if my copy might be a little bit weak. At f11 it's fine, but at f8 it's hardly better than my 24-70mm Zeiss 2.8 is at 28mm, though obviously one is much smaller and easy to tote around. I'll have to do some more in depth distance tests against my most used wide prime, the Sammy 24mm f1.4, but I just wanted to see some other full sized shots to know if I'm just being nitpicky or if I might have a weaker lens
When I get a chance I'll post some of my samples as well
You seem to have a good copy. It looks similar to what my FE 28/2 is capable of. (My first copy was horrible)

Thanks Fred, I appreciate your input! I'll give that a try, I messed with it a bit and it seemed to improve the image a bit, I suppose I need to work more with sharpening as typically all my landscapes use default values which I've come to realize might be a bit too optimistic.
How do you think the FE 28 compares with the 16-35mm f4? My most use lens on the a7r is the FD 20mm (which I will admit is much worse than the 28 FE), and it seems like that could replace my Tokina 17, my FD 20mm, my FE 28mm, and my lust for a FE 35mm, in theory anyway!
I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on the 28 vs 16-35mm as well.
For me it would replace my Tamron 17mm and OM 24mm f/2.8. I'd keep the FE28 simply because it's small and fast for 28mm. I'd still lust over a similar FE 35mm. I'd still buy a Rokinon 18mm f/2 if Rokinon would make it for FF.
Spent more time with the lens, it's not perfect on the a7r at 100% in terms of sharpness, but flare resistance is superb! A fun lens to us, I'm happier with it now. Perhaps not as good as the Samyang 24mm f1.4, but it's a lot easier to use!
I just got mine from an FM'er (with the 21mm converter) and I have to say that I am loving it. I had the 35/2.8, and found it just a touch to slow for some of my more regular indoor haunts. The 28/2 is just about perfect. Loving it. And for my very rare instances of ultra wide angle, the converter is perfect. The flaws, for my shooting, are perfectly acceptable. It gives me a prime kit of 21/2.8, 28/2, 55/1.8, and (Minolta) 100/2.
I have a shoot today for a business' web site. Should come in handy.
Well, you are comparing it to one of the best 24-70 zooms..... it has flaws, but ~28mm is awfully good.

So far, the only thing I miss about the 35/2.8 is the size. I haven't ever been attached to either the 28 or 35mm focal length (always been more of a ~50mm user), and the 28/2 is just excellent for my shooting.
