p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Veiled Sunset

From Little Corona in SoCal a few nights ago. There ended up being a low bank of clouds on the horizon that blocked the sunset and only allowed the sunset colors to reflect on the upper most clouds, the lower altitude clouds didn't light up. With the direct light being blocked, I left the light in the foreground a little more subdued than most sunset shots since the sunset was no longer lighting it up.

This was also shot with the newer Nikon 18-35mm lens to test it out. While I normally prefer to shoot wider with my 14-24mm or 16-35mm, I think the size and decreased weight of the 18-35mm can provide some nice options where that is a factor. So far I am impressed with it's overall sharpness and IQ.

All comments are welcome.

Oh yeah Jim! I think that lens works just fine in your hands. Love the image you got here.

I've always found coastal shooting challenging, mostly because it's so hard to make it work.
This image though works on all levels.. I love the 1-2-3 you got going with the rocks and the rushing waves in the foreground!
Congrats!

That marine layer is killer man! We see it more frequently up here in NorCal lol :P. Though, I think the colors fit the mood quite well. I like the wave patterns on this one.

I've been wanting to try the new 18-35 out, but have been mostly distracted by the 20mm 1.8. If you're going for portable but versatile and sharp, I feel that's a pretty good choice too. Gorgeous sunstars, too, which is a first in a very long while for Nikon.

Gorgeous colors in the sky there! I was there yesterday night to test out my new Alpinelabs Radian, actually. Got some good color but it wasn't as spectacular as today...

Thanks Bruno, I am glad you like this shot. We sure do have some awesome beaches down here in SoCal.

Hey Jason, glad you liked this one. These are actually clouds not a marine layer... I know you guys up there in NorCal only ever see the marine layer. The low stuff along the horizon that blocked the sun as it set though is all that we have of the marine layer at this point. I took this when we had the storm coming

Thanks Matt! I am glad you liked this one. I did look at the 20mm f1.8 as a lightweight alternative, and it tested out pretty nicely when I got my hands on one a few weeks ago. But for me, while I have a couple of primes, they are my emergency lenses... I know the prime time guys will be cringing to read that. But I prefer the flexibility of zooms with shooting landscapes. It's not always possible to get to a location to get the composition one wants with a prime, and a zoom can allow that.

Glad to hear you are testing out something new, it's always fun to get our hands on new gear and try things out.

Great use of a lead in line with the rocks in the foreground, Jim. I like the shutter speed you chose to use as well. An all around solid image.

Hey Jim,
You're on fire in regards to interesting water lately. Beautiful light and color.
It looks like you're about to get wet though.

I like how the motion of the water in the lower left is balanced with sea stacks in the upper right. Nice composition!

I love it in all respects! Comp, water motion, and pp. Big wall space required.
