p.2 #1 · Yakim Peled

Really sad, I didn't know this. I had many conversations in the Canon forum over in photo.net with him.

p.2 #2 · Yakim Peled

A true gentleman, Yakim was always, and I mean always very polite and cordial.
I exchanged some PM's with him and he was always a pleasure to talk to.

He was never confrontational in his posts and took deep care in elaborating them as to not offend anyone nor be misinterpreted, given the multicultural and multinational community that is FM.
A true example to follow.

He was not always greeted with the same posture, unfortunately.
Sadly, some FM members (exceptions to the rule, fortunately) use certain "tones of voice" that should be left elsewhere. Yakim was even, at one time, a victim of ad hominem attack and his nationality (and everything that derives from that fact) used against him.

Even in the face of insult he responded in an educated and respectful way.
At one time I felt the need to stand up to him. Such a nice persona, a true gentleman, should not be treated like he was at that time. He wrote back to me with a considerably long text, thanking me.
Unfortunately, I can't share it because the forum, at one time, eliminated all old PM and these were sadly lost.

I have suffered from depression for the last 6 years and while I was far from doing what Yakim did, the thought did, at one time, cross my mind.

I would like to use this little episode (Yakim's ad hominem) as a suggestion to FM members who routinely use harsh words in their posts. Sometimes, even a certain implied "tone of voice" can hurt. And some people here certainly like to stand tall on their high horse.
We never know who is on the other side of the screen and, more importantly, the dilemmas and problems they are facing and currently going through.
There are human beings on the other side of the screen and while I do like the "man up" expression, well, we are not machines and, consequently, all have our own personal fragility.
I certainly am not.

Besides, no one is the sole owner of the universal truth, we all can be (and are) wrong sometimes. Humbleness is a quality often forgotten by those with very high IQ and knowledge in specific matters. Yakim was quite intelligent and knowledgeable photography wise, but that did not stop him from continuously trying to learn more, even from those who, apparently, possessed less experience and knowledge than him.

Lastly, I would like to remind that all of us started from scratch.
With zero knowledge.
Many accomplished photographers here seem to forget this.

In Yakim's memory, I would like to suggest that all of us remember this.

Happy shooting.

P.S.
Big thanks to the OP for doing this.

Thanks, Peter.

IMHO, I believe that the best way we can honor his memory is to be thoughtful, considerate and polite in our posts.
As he clearly demonstrated time and time again, we can disagree and still keep it cordial.

Also, if someone is considering doing what he did, please seek help.
Professional or otherwise.

I remember Yakim, and remember his passing..it was quite a shock at the time and very sad -his lack of cynicism was refreshing I recall...

And perhaps we should not be judging others when we are not privy to all the circumstances. In some instances it can be the most generous act a person can perform. And it was his life, not yours.

..............and is, at it's root, the most selfish act a person can perform.

When I read his posts and his trademark salutation, I would always smile.

This world needs more like Yakim....we would all be better off.

+1 @ Yakim ... a good man and a good FM'er.

I suspect those two things are strongly correlated.
May we all aspire to follow his lead and improve ourselves in such (et al) areas of life.

Happy Shooting.

I was shocked and saddened at the loss of Yakim, this coming from a person who has fought his own demons bred by involuntary service in a pointless and savage war. I've had to ask myself the question on occasion, "Am I going to get up and do it again today?" So far I've always chosen to get up and go.

Our lives are our own, and the right to live also - too me - includes the right to die. Many will disagree with me and that's fine. Yakim's tone was always similar to what I hope I employ when I express opinions or offer advice. "This did this for me, you might consider it."

Totally unrelated but still connected, when Robin Williams chose to kill himself, I sat down and wept. If he couldn't find his way, what else would the rest of us who wrestle the demons do? So often it is our brightest and best - like Yakim and Robin - that can't live in this world.

So please FM, remember our best, consider your voice in response, and most of all: keep shooting.

Robert

Yes Robert, well said. Interesting how killing many other people in war is acceptable, yet taking your own life is not.

+1.
Taking one's own life, after all, is the quintessential act of defiance for many an organized religion..

I agree. I think when a person calls this an act of selfishness, it's more than likely the same type of person that just repeats phrases that they hear, or sound good to them - without much thought. I only knew and enjoyed Yakim through this forum. Given how complicated life can be, I personally would never call a profound decision like that "selfish". I don't care to pass judgment or push an ideology point of view on his passing, I just miss him on the forum...simple as that.

Wow, I've become a much more infrequent lurker at FM, but this thread struck a chord. As far as I can remember Yakim was a good man and I remember his trademark signoff "Happy shooting".

The reasons one comes to such decisions as his are very difficult to assess for someone who never walked in his shoes. I wish him peace - it is not for me to judge his decisions. But like galenapass said, I do miss him on the forum.

As one who received a slight reprimand from Yakim I realised that one who has been on the end of some predudice can see it more plainly when it is applied to others. he was right to correct me and I have had occasion to pause and rethink my words. I had tarred all of one group because of the actions of a few. Rest in peace old son, you made the world a better place.

p.2 #19 · Yakim Peled

Hi,

This is an emotional thread for me in so many ways.

I would just like to add, to the preceding reverent and celebratory posts above, that those who are severely depressed and contemplating suicide, are often dealing with few options during a crisis.

For example, if the crisis were a test question, then answers for everyone thinking correctly would be 'a' through 'z'. But, for someone in such depression the answers they see are like looking through a tunnel...with only few or maybe one available - with one of them being suicide.

In photospeak...it would be like you're taking an action shot for a diver in a dark gym and your camera has only two settings, off or f11 iso 100 1/30s.

So I guess what I'm trying to babble out, that it's difficult for one to empathize with the person who had to experience so much pain and divorce from the world. Their lives are so much more than an ending date on a tombstone...the hyphen between the dates is what matters, and their pain left behind with suicide affects their loved ones and friends long after they are gone. And, that the pain left behind is most hurtful to those closest to them...because those are the ones who love and miss them most.

-John

My thoughts go out to his loved ones. I was at university (second year of a diploma in photography) when I got a phone call from an aunt to say my sister had been found dead at the base of a cliff. Her pain was gone. But the family? Guilt, despair... we ran the whole gamut of emotions - how could those closest not see she desperately needed help? It takes a while for all of that to settle. My mother is still carrying the weight of her death.
