You have some great captures! #5 is my favorite. You have great lighting and color. Then #1 for the smooth lines.
And then #7
That is a crazy image when you just gaze at it. At first it just looks like laser beams but after staring at it for a little bit it became some crazy cool looking segmented sunrise shining onto the ground.

Hey Dave,
Its quite simple actually. What I did is used my small flash light that I set to a "spot" mode. I then ran from one rock to another illuminating it from above for a fraction of a second (I just touched the ON/Off button as oppose to pressing it all the way down until it clicks. That would take too long). I set my camera to a manual mode and at low ISO (around 300) and exposed for 30 seconds. I'm actually behind of each rock (and running in the darkness between them) but because it's so dark the camera's sensor didn't register me at all, and it was "overwhelmed" by the light coming from the flash light. There were small spots above each rock (the actual lightbulb of a flash light) but I took two exposures, this, and one more completely dark, and then removed the small spots (mask them out in PS). That was it. Mystery solved.
Here are two more I illuminated with my green laser I (normally) use for polar alignment. It has over 2 miles range and what I do is point it at Polaris to see exactly where I'm aligning my Astrotrac to. Plus it's an awesome toy ...Show more →
Thanks Greg - I never would have guess that! I guess its creativity in motion! Dave
Thanks Guys. Just for your info my 800mm f/8 mirror lens arrived and works great. It was only $200 so not bad at all considering Nikon's new 800mm f/5.6 lens costs $18K. But, for astro photography the 200 dollars lens is good enough, plus it weights only about 3 pounds and it's very small for its reach.
Nice work Gregg. I too like #2 for the unique lighting that you employed. The only thing that bugs me is the quite soft horizon line. Bummer about that. The image of Bryce Canyon is perhaps my favorite ... just lovely light you created there. Very nice!
These are all wonderful. Thanks for sharing your lighting technique as I wondered how you pulled these shots off. You made the Badlands look, well, not bad.
