I'm with you. I can buy a 1D X for $4100 so why buy a 5D with this specification. Of course, they are likely testing various configurations, but its getting close enough to announcement time that they need to decide on the camera and start producing sensors, and long lead parts.
If the sensor is a dual pixel sensor, I might be convinced.
Smaller, lighter body and silent shutter. I didn't buy a 1dx specifically for these reasons.

Assuming for the moment that the rumors have legs, they also suggest that something will replace the 1Dx that will offer even greater performance in some unspecified ways. I would guess that a revamped 1Dx (II?) would cost more than what you can currently pay for a new 1Dx, and that there would be a not-insignificant difference between list prices for the two cameras.
Of course, at that point, if this is remotely true stuff, the current 1Dx would likely be available for even lower prices... and we don't actually have any idea what the updated 5D-ish thing would cost.

Not interested in a high ISO low res action camera, but the text also speaks of a 1DX replacement excerpted below:

This rumor doesn't make sense and the 18mp size doesn't make a lot of sense for a 4k camera. Unless it's the same thing as the 1dc and it makes 4k from a cropped version.

A 5D4c (Cinema) to replace the 1Dc makes more sense with those specs.
Dual CFast = 4K RAW...so I'm still figuring >$5K US.

Actually the 5D IV rumor is still there, its just down in 4th place at this moment. The 5DC is another rumor of yet a different camera. ...Show more →
Hi Ben,
I agree. I'm seeing a 5D Mark IV and a 5D Cinema (replacing the 1Dc) as making the most sense in these rumors, if true. Makes even more sense considering Canon's recent fire sale of $4,000 off the price of the 1Dc...looks to me like they're clearing inventory.
Seeing how Canon will be at NAB in April, I'm guessing the wait won't be much longer if there's anything to these rumors of a 4K DSLR for the rest of us. The pro's and the industry, I'm sure, are ready for a 4K available-light PJ cam...so us twilight critter-shooters will just have to hope for the best!
Even if the DR on this imaginary camera does not prove to be industry-leading, we should expect that Canon will incorporate whatever it is they're calling their new "low noise technologies" that will be arriving in the 5Ds and 5Ds R. At 18MP we could be looking at those very clean, and recoverable, shadows on your wishlist!

Who wants an 18MP body in 2015? It's madness, unless there will also be another body later.

Lets not forget one important factor: The 1DX only has one competitor and thats the Nikon D4 and D4S and those have only 16mp. Its unlikely the D4S will be replaced in 2015, but it seems likely the D5 will have up to 24mp when it is released.
I shot with 1Dc at last Christmas party. Love the color and DR, just beautiful straight out of camera. If Canon can produce 5D IV or 5Dc or whatever name is with lower price..I'm in.
Since the 1Dc was somewhat of a flop in terms of sales, and it was just a pricy 1Dx with video abilities which were pretty out-dated too soon, my bet is that canon are going to drop any top pro body except the 1Dx and make the 5D line similar to the A7 line from sony,
It makes sense if they will use the same body of the 5D as make a IV for general/wedding photographers, 5Ds/R for high MP and 5Dc for video with 4K ability.
This will make a lot of sense as it will save them money, reduce the need different manufacturing lines, and hopefully allow them to concentrate more on making better sensors than trying to sell overprices cameras.
In case I was not clear, the thing I wanted to point out was the side rumor and the hint of a new 1DX with dramatic increase of DR and speed along with more (maybe not dramatically more) MP.
Now it makes me wonder if this could be a whole new sensor technology from Canon that will be too expensive for the 5D series?
It seems to me that we Canon folk have been lusting for DR and MP. Of course there are all the other desires for video, high iso speed etc, But I think DR and MP have been at the top of the list. The 5DS only addresses one of those two and neglects the rest. But within the Canon line up, the only thing really missing is DR and MP.

I that we lust not because everyone needs it, but more because we have been seen that it is possible.
Until the D800/E/810, canon was excelling, but with very little changes in DR and MP from the original 5D to the current 5D3, we started to see that there are more options out there without selling the house for a MF digital back.
People are mostly happy with their current gear, but starts to feel standing in place. If another 5D brings similar MP and similar DR, there won't be a point to upgrade. And I'm sure canon will feel the heat of that.
After all, the only reason to really upgrade from the 5D2 to the 5D3 was mainly the focus system. Finally a good focus system affordable on a FF. ISO changes might not have brought enough sales on its own.
Now, they don't have many options where to upgrade in order to bring out sales. Mirrorless sales are already starting to make progress quite nicely.
As a long time 1D body user, low ISO DR is not really a big priority for me. High ISO performance is far more critical to my work (sports). Of the sports shooters I talk to no one has ever mentioned low ISO DR. If I was Canon and I was creating a 1DX2 I would continue to prioritize high ISO performance above all else. If we get both so much the better but my expectations are already a small bump in MP and better high ISO.
