Last dragon of the year.
Like many of you in this thread I've owned many lenses over the years. There are 52+ lenses in the room I'm typing in. The 500PF is here as well, but the 300PF is above them all. Pure genius on Nikon's part! I'm a Sony guy but the 300PF and 500PF sucked me into Nikonland
300mm PF + 1.7TCii.
For those of you thinking about the 500mm PF and already having the 300mm PF, I think long and hard if you shoot in an area with plenty of light.

^JohnK wonderful work.
I'm still amazed at 420mm in such a light package that is so sharp.
Appreciate that coming from you. Agreed. I'd say the 300 PF has been the most important, enjoyable, versatile piece of glass I've had the good fortune to add to my kit
I posted the same thing over in the other PF thread, but: I'm seeing lots of amazing wildlife shots here, but is anyone using this for car racing? (Or any other motorsports!) Its hard to find photos or opinions on this lens outside of wildlife shooting!
More wonderful work.
My better-half states that the 300PF and the 500PF have a 3D quality to them. I agree
with here that both lenses have a certain perspective and depth to them not found in all lenses....either
that or the D500 is magic too.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
Imo, the 300 PF does its best rendering if you're able to get close enough to the subject to fill the frame (or close). The detail in the subject, plus the almost "smoke-like" bokeh, create a unique effect
Images grabbed from farther back are a little "harsh" though, imo.

NOT MY PHOTOS; but in case someone finds this post from searching with the same question, Armin Ausejo has taken lots of photos with this lens; It was his long tele of choice for Formula Drift 2015 and 2016:
