Does this combo on D500 still have good (accurate and reasonably fast) AF for closeup work like dragonflies?
And how does it compare to using the 300PF/TC1.7 on Sony A9?
Technic I'm too new to the D500 to truthfully answer.
And I've not tried the 300+1.7TC on the a9. I think maybe Alex Phan has ??
For work on dragonflies I assume you mean for dragons in flight? You can see my example
above of a perched dragon where the 300+1.7 had no problem---assuming the pic is acceptable
to you.
I'll try the 300+1.7TCii on the a9 sometime next week. The hospital 'owns' me every other week
and now is my work week.

Your dragonfly picture looks fine to me, I just wondered how much the TC slows down the AF for such closeup shots. On my Canon 80D many lenses get a bit erratic for closeups when TC is used, moving focus in the wrong direction and back again etc. I would use the bare 300PF for in-flight shots but if AF is still fast enough with the 1.7TC that would be a bonus. +/- 500mm is usually too long to frame a flying dragonfly and primarily for situations where I cannot get any closer.
Will look forward to your experience using this combo on A9. I'm not in a hurry to buy, dragonfly season is almost over here so I have half a year to decide about upgrading
Technic, the only 'pain' using the combo was the MFD. As I recall I was like 10 feet away...don't quote me on the exact footage but I remember stepping back several times.
Regarding the macro prowess, it is just one super feature of the 300PF. I'm really smitten by this lens. The 500PF is here now too and I'm sure I'll find a use for it but the 300 instantly went into my lens hall of fame.
OK, on my list to try the a9+1.7TCii+300PF. If you don't here back please remind me.
I guess most using the 300PF are Nikonians.
I'm just over the top happy the 300PF works with my Sony.
Now if Commlite would get the adapter up to speed for the 500PF
all would be good in the world
