I've read far too many negative reports from capable photographers(many responders on this thread) using the 7D ii who are very familiar with complicated Canon AF systems, that my plans to acquire this body are basically on hold permanently.
It amazes me that Canon even let this camera onto the marketplace with so many issues. I hope that Canon was not responding to competitive pressures and released the body too soon with known problems.
I agree that the issues should not have happened, however, the first one I had in AI Servo was the fastest focusing thing I ever had in my hands. It was an absolute joy to shoot (Just nothing I shot in oneshot was in focus) That is what made me keep trying. I may be wrong, but I think it's worth the effort if you can get one that works properly. If mine comes back working as it should, with it's small size and it's high MP, handling noise well, then I'll really like this camera and the trouble and frustration will be worth it.
Canon's not perfect but it's no different from the rest of them. They've all had their snafus and given the history with the 1DIII it's nothing new. I happened to purchase one of those non focusing 1DIII's that was still out there screwed up a couple of years ago. Canon still took it in and serviced it paying shipping both ways and it came back working flawlessly. I've had to be patient a few times but I have to say they have pretty much delivered most of the time. , I was bitching this morning about the 4 days at CPS on my camera and hubby just looked at me and smiled and said "your're spoiled". , I think he's right.
I read a ost on POTN that Canon had admitted to a thread responder that the 7D ii was a AI Servo camera and not to expect in focus in One Shot. Obviously, this information should be taken with a huge dose of skepticsm.
I really want to look forward to getting this body. I have a 7D v1 and it's a great camera and has never given me OOF nothing. My 1D IV is such a consistent performer and if I jump, I want the 7D ii to be as good or hopefully better. I certainly don't want to drop $2,400 with grp and have something sub-par. I don't mind driving to Canon(it's 30mins away), but I'd rather not.
Let's hope your 7D ii comes back working perfectly.

That would be a terrible admission from Canon if it had any truth to it.
I think the "huge dose of skeptism" applies.
It isn't as if they have never produced a working One Shot AF.

I thought, at the time I read the post, that the credibility of the information posted was suspect. Can't think that Canon would do that.
Mine went off to CPS this afternoon. Similar issue to Kathy's - still were good, but you put something moving in front of it and it's all over. Verified with 3 different lenses that all smoke on my 1Dx and 1D4.
Hoping they get it straightened out because the stills show the real potential of this camera.
Mine came back today after being gone for 9 days total (with platinum service level from CPS). They had to "realign the sensor" which was causing "AF to miss". Took it out with the dog for a bit and things look to be bang on!
Looks really good. So how long was yours actually there at Canon for the servicing? This is the 4th day for mine to actually be there and still no notice yet that it is being shipped back. I'm Gold, so they say 3 days normally but except for a real problem I've normally gotten things shipped back the day they received it At this point I'm thinking it is not coming back today.
Things may have changed because it has been a while since I sent something to Canon and had them ship it back to me, but I remember watching the status of my repair and it didn't change, but the camera showed up on my doorstep. At that time, Canon was known for being slow to update their repair status page. Hopefully this is the case for you too, Kathy.
Yes you can never be sure about the shipping status. A few years ago I received a camera back at home, and the "completed" status was just posted on that same day. No notice that it had been shipped.
Apparently I acquired a good 7D II. I did not pre-order (not that it should matter) and I bought mine from a local chain in California (Samys). It works great in both Servo and One shot. I've been using it with my 300 f2.8 and the new 100-400 II. Even with a teleconverter on there the Servo tracks great. No issues here.

I sent it out on Tuesday of last week, they received it on Wednesday. They shipped it back to my the following Thursday overnight, which I received it today. I sent 3 items - a 7D for CMS, a 100-400 for CMS (which ended up being a repair errr), and the 7D MK II. They gave me no estimate on the mk ii, but the 100-400 and mk ii arrived home today (both were used in the image above - they calibrated the lens to the body in the repair on the lens for no extra charge!).
It's a new complicated camera. The last thing I would send techs to practice on. If it's not perfect it goes right back to the retailer and send me a good one.
Not as simple to send back to the retailer when it comes from Canada and has a 7 day return window. Much preferred to send it to Canon and have it come back knowing its good.

I have never had a repair take more than 7 full calendar days, including weekends, holidays, days in transit.
My most recent was my 1div, and it was 4 days total.
This is my second time. The first was my broken 70 200 2.8 is II. It was there laying on a supervisors desk for 3 days until I called and threw a fit. i couldn't help but wonder how long it would have laid there if i hadn't complained. As it was that repair totaled 10 days or so. Normally I get them back in a week or less.
Oh and the above was its second trip for the same repair. They put the barrel on backwards in the first trip. So it arrives back and lays there so the supervisor can figure out what went wrong.
